Current Events > I absolutely loathe minimalism especially in phone tech. Switched from S9 to S23

I recently tried upgrading from an S9+ to S23+ . I legitimately thought lack of soundjack would be my biggest dealbreaker. Oh how naive I was.

The S23:

1) Doesn't have a hard press button to go to the home screen from any app like s9 and what came before

2) Doesn't even have LED light, such a simple thing that makes a world of difference, from the red charging light indicator to the blue text light to the green missed call light and so on. Why remove what was a nice convenience?

3) The entire phone is just screen, no bezels whatsoever. Worse, they literally put the front camera in the middle of the fucking screen. What is this shit? Distracting as hell

4) The power button and volume control button are on the same side. They really couldn't have put them on opposite ends?

And this is just at a glance. I can't even imagine what other features they must have removed. Gone are the days of the S5, the phone that made me switch from Apple to Samsung because of all the improvements it had as a smartphone.

Losing the LED light was a big one for me. I always just glanced at the phone to see if the light was blinking, rather than having to pick up the phone to see if there is a text. Obviously it was taken out to give more screen, but I would rather just have the light.

Facts. I got an S7 Active (thing was a waterproof nokia-level brick) in 2016. I think it had two buttons on the front which was a game changer. But yeah. It died last October so I had to upgrade to s22. I'm with you on all those points.

I always disliked the phones with curved edges that make it seem like there's no bezel. Don't they know I hold a phone with one hand?

S8 Active was the peak of phone design. Flag ship hardware, durable, good screen (until the thing turns pink on you), great battery, wireless charging, head phone jack, dual sim, and bezels that allowed a hand to be a hand. I'd still be using it if they didn't drop support for it on my carrier

I run a CAT phone now, and while it's similar to the S8, it's worse on all fronts besides running it over with a tank. This thing is fucking slow for 2023

1) your s23 doesn't have the option to use three button nav instead of gestures? Even my Pixel 6a has that lol

2) yup, the killing of the notification LED sucks. There's probably an app to do this on-screen if you don't find the always on display an ample substitute

3) lol yeah the hole in the screen approach looks stupid, but you'll get used to it

4) it's like that on my Pixel too. Annoying for screenshots, but doesn't Samsung have some sort of built in gesture for that?

With the exception of 4, all of what you describe are improvements. Hard front button isn't needed, you dont need LEDs when the display always shows notifications, and no bezel or notch is plain better.

I get it with the side buttons though, Samsung can never make up their god damn minds on a standard configuration.

That comes across like one of those people who during Sony ps3 gen 7 would have been like "you don't need rumble" and would praise removal of standardized features that improve consumer experience of tech products.

Just bit of a bold statement to make. Also find it hard to believe that you can hold the phone that's all screen without the tips of your fingers or palm accidentally brushing on the phone. Like I'm trying to swipe and it won't register, until I realize it's because a tiny sliver of my hand is on the top of the phone which is now all touch screen. So apparently you now need to hold your phone with your fingertips in a pinch like gesture? Just extremely uncomfortable to hold. Gonna see if a case fixes that at least.

Yeah I definitely prefer the blinking lights, rather than having the phone screen be always on or pick it up to check texts.

At this rate I'm glad they didn't remove like... I dunno, the flashlight as well, but I wouldn't put it past them at the trajectory they're going.

I was unhappy with the removal of the notification LED when I got the Note 10+, but I got over it quickly, tbh.

I don't really miss the physical home button either, and I'm glad there's no bezel. I hardly even notice the camera. A notch would be much more distracting, imo.

Also theres a way to do color coded notifications while the screen is off. Called Edge lighting.

I agree with all your points but I'd also like to add that they got rid of the health chip or whatever from the back. You could place your finger there to get a reading, now you need to buy an expensive watch to what was originally free. Oh and i feel that the back fingerprint scanner was faster and more accurate than the in screen one of modern galaxies.

Physical buttons suck.

LED is whatever, minor nitpick not even worth acknowledging

Large bezels are awful and the on screen camera isn't a huge deal, eventually under screen cameras will progress to the point that they're not completely shit and that will solve the problem

Ew, both side buttons is not okay in 2023

None of those are negatives to me lol. I have an S22+ and my only gripe is that Android Auto apparently has compatible issues with this generation of Galaxy phones.

I never had a Samsung Galaxy before this, but my ex did. I hated the bezels, I hated the flashing notification lights (distracting as hell), and I especially hated the curved screen. If they still had that I would have continued avoiding this line of phones lol.

Some variant of the S7 that was made for AT&T only or something like that. It was the S7 but for people who are "active" (outdoorsy, hiking, etc - places where you are more likely to drop it or have it get wet)

It was the best phone I've had. Now my s22 can't figure out the autocorrect after nearly a year of learning

Damn real shame they don't do them anymore. I'm not against touch screen it's very convenient, but I'm just asking for 1 measly button, it would make the world of difference for the phone handling.

There's nothing crabby about it. The phones have had diminishing returns on improvements and they take things away like traditional audio inputs and expandable storage just to drive up consumer costs. And as the OSs age they perform less well because these are iterative programs, and iterative programs run into issues eventually because old code floats around.

I have a Note 10+ that I bought specifically for Runescape on the go and its so well built that I have a hard time thinking about replacing it. I might try to get the battery replaced soon, but from the super fast charging, qi charging other devices, Bluetooth S Pen, camera, expandable memory and general quality of the phone I have a hard time wanting to move on. Especially since the Note got discontinued. As long as it continues to run great, I'll keep it. If it dies, I think I'll move on to the iPhone 14 now that the Note line is toast.

Same with the Galaxy Watch. I have the last model they made with the rotating bezel, and I can't see myself buying any of their future watches now that they discontinued that feature.

You're outdated on a couple things here.

The Galaxy Ultra line is the new Note. I'm currently on the S23 Ultra and had a Note 20 Ultra previously. This S23 Ultra is a Note in everything but the name.

The Galaxy Watch is still offered with a rotating bezel with the Watch 4 Classic and the upcoming Watch 6 is expected to launch with the rotating bezel.

Yeah I bought a bl5000 which was the cheapest phone to play genshin impact decently and it still has notification led lights and the battery is amazing my main problem with it is no micro SD card slot for storing music but I'm just managing until I get a better model of the same brand with more storage it currently has 128gb.
