Ugandas president, Yoweri Museveni, has signed into law the worlds harshest anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which allows the death penalty for homosexual acts. The move immediately drew condemnation from many Ugandans as well as widespread international outrage. The UK government said it was appalled by the deeply discriminatory bill, which it said will damage Ugandas international reputation. US President Joe Biden decried the act as shameful and tragic violation of universal human rights. He said Washington was considering sanctions and restriction of entry into the United States against anyone involved in serious human rights abuses a suggestion that Ugandan officials may face repercussions. Early on Monday, the speaker of the Ugandan parliament, Anita Annet Among, released a statement on social media confirming Museveni had assented to the law first passed by MPs in March. It imposes the death penalty or life imprisonment for certain same-sex acts, up to 20 years in prison for recruitment, promotion and funding of same-sex activities, and anyone convicted of attempted aggravated homosexuality faces a 14-year sentence. Described by the UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker Trk, as shocking and discriminatory, the bill was passed by all but two of 389 MPs on 21 March. Museveni had 30 days to either sign the legislation into law, return it to parliament for revisions or veto it. He sent it back to MPs in April, with a request for reconsideration. The bill would have still become law without the presidents assent if he returned it a second time.
Among tweeted on Monday morning: The president has assented to the Anti-Homosexuality Act. As the parliament of Uganda, we have answered the cries of our people. We have legislated to protect the sanctity of [the] family.

The speaker said MPs had withstood pressure from bullies and doomsday conspiracy theorists and called for courts to begin enforcing the new laws. Martin Ssempa, one of the main backers of the bill, presented it as a victory against the US and Europe and suggested Uganda needed to push back against groups working to tackle HIV. He said: The president has shown great courage to defy bullying of the Americans and Europeans. That bullying we shall not give you money. They intimidate and threaten you. In a joint statement, the heads of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, UNAids and the US Presidents Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar) reacted with deep concern and said progress on tackling Aids and HIV was now in grave jeopardy.

it's sad when you look at the history around sexuality/gender identity and expression in different countries, and see how much views towards them have changed due to colonialism and religious indoctrination.

Funny the article omits any reference to Christians or missionaries. I wonder why that is.

Judging from this topic, I'd think it was a one to one equation in which all of us believers were calling for the stoning of adulterers, gamblers, and people who love members of the same sex.

It isn't my mindset.

Christian is not a synonym for Republican, nor is it standard for Christians outside of the Republican party to wish death on homosexuals. Even among the Republican party, they're not hive-minded on the issue. Republicans can be as varied in their views as Democrats.

The majority of Christians have at least some tolerance for it with most young Christians being fully non-bigoted on the issue. It isn't two passing mentions in the Bible that makes homosexuality such a hot-button issue. If the Book of Leviticus were the standard, the extremists would hate Red Lobster with equal fervor. It's people who seek religious justification for their bigotry.

Who is Barry referring to when he says "these Christians"? Is he talking about pastors or the congregation? Someone being preached to can fully believe they are acting accord to God's will.

Preachers in that quote was used in a derogatory sense. He just meant any kind of sanctimonious proselytizing political upstart who felt they're on a mission from God to make God's word the literal law. Everyone in Congress at the time was Christian, he wasn't referring to them and never was. He was predicting that a group of like minded fundamentalist evangelical people would capture the Republican party and he was right.

Dubya himself admitted he attacked Iraq because God told him to do it.

Maybe you don't consider Republicans to be synonymous with Christians, which is true in a not all frogs are toads sense, but you should not be under the impression that Republicans are secular in any way these days. It is a completely religiously driven party.

Secular conservatives exist, but I will concede that the Republican party appeals primarily to religious conservatives. "We love God and God loves us," is very effective in getting people to follow along without asking questions.

I guess so, but there's being homophobic and then there's just being mean as shit to boot. Some people may not agree with sexual choice, but some will use power and influence to make sure their lives are Misrable. Even during my younger teen years when I was against gay marriage I never called for anyone to be attacked or killed like some people want today.
