Slowly coming close to 100%ing the game.

Finally managed to fully explore both the depths and sky maps.

Got the medal of honor for Flux Constructs, Moldugas, and Froxes. 30 Taluses and 20 Hinoxes left for their medals.

Still missing around 50 bubbul gems, still need to max out a few armor sets, and I have around 650 korok seeds.

I think I can get everything done by the end of the month.

Lightning Temple done. That was actually a pretty great temple. Maybe a bit on the short side, and the core structure of "go figure out X separate puzzles to unlock the boss room" isn't necessarily my favourite, but it wouldn't have felt out of place in any other Zelda game, so that's nifty. The boss was alright. Nothing special, nothing terrible.

What I think happened with the gibdos, is they basically combined them with redeads and got rid of the mummy design to avoid offending people, and added the insect qualities to maybe try to make them creepy but still safe for kids? Idk, old redeads were plenty creepy, and I played OoT and MM when I was like 8 and 10 years old.

I feel like they just asked "how can we make the creepy undead things even creepier?" and just ran with the whole moth aesthetic as a way to do that, working particularly well with the whole "they're making the sand shroud" thing because wings can stir up sand. It's weird and creepy and I think it works.

Mummies being portrayed as monsters only really started in 1930 or so. Nintendo's been around since 1889. Undead mummies started showing up in stories earlier in the 19th century than that, but it was usually as a romantic interest instead of a monster.

Man, remember how awesome the TP temples were? SS had some good ones, too (Cistern and the sandship). While having a yeti's mansion and a prison/execution ground be a "temple" doesn't mesh with the idea of it being a holy place of power, it sure made for some cool diversity and new sights and sounds.

TP isn't my favorite but it does have some of the best and most unique Dungeons for sure, I think it sucks you have to play through the obligatory Forest/Water/Fire temples, I think the insistence to do those evry single game led to the repetitiveness of the franchise.

I didn't mind so much, since we didn't see those temples in MM or TWW, so brining them back in TP felt like an OK time to do so. It was kinda cool to use those as a baseline, then see them really branch out and get creative with it.

Eh. DRC was more volcano/lava, and neither were temples, only dungeons (kinda akin to the Child Link dungeons in OoT). I know that's splitting hairs a bit, but still a difference, since Wind and Earth for the only 2 formal "temples" in TWW,

I cannot fucking stand that armor is so crucial for survivability in this game and every single piece of armour requires its own unique bullshit plus money to upgrade, and then a significant number of armor pieces straight up can't be upgraded at all.

Also fuck the dragons. Who thought this was such a good mechanic for materials that it needed to be in two games.

I like the looks of many of the armor sets but I'm definitely not crazy about the armor system as a whole. No transmog + armor that can't be upgraded = why bother? Plus too many sets are redundant or immediately outclassed or just bad and should have their effects combined with others. Like the Frostbite set is cumbersome to find, trash defense, useless effect, doesn't even grant cold resistance, but needs several Gleeok horns to upgrade? The snow boots also don't grant cold resistance or trigger any set bonuses. Why not just combine these together, or let any combo of 'cold' related armor trigger set bonuses?

The Zora chestpiece specifically lets Link swim up waterfalls while also improving his swim speed and also also triggers a set bonus with the other Zora pieces, I wish this were the case with other armor.

Then there's armor where 80% of Link's legs are exposed (Zonai, Wild) being tied with actual metal knight armor in granting the highest defense in the game. That one is just a small nitpick lol but still armor system is baffling at times

Ironically, the need for so many rupees to upgrade armour means that having all of the random reward chests that give breakable weapons (supposedly because breakable weapons are needed to give meaningful rewards in random chests) just give 20-50 rupees instead would have eliminated the supposed need for the weapon durability system (instead just treating fusion as a temporary buff) and also made armour upgrades feel a lot less tedious. Alternatively, I still think scrapping durability, swapping environmental weapon rewards to different armour pieces, and having the upgrade system affect weapons instead (working through 4-5 tiers of upgrades for each of the four major weapon types) would work better than how grindy and unfocused the armour system is. Also, yes, there need to be transmog slots, because fashion is the true endgame of every RPG.

Of course, in practice, you don't actually need to upgrade more than 1-2 sets to max for defense purposes, since most other sets are focused more on utility and you'll want to swap to a combat-focused one in cases where you're fighting. Still, though, there's definitely room for improvement. If nothing else, by the time you can actually get max defense, you've got enough hearts that you could tank a few hits naked if you wanted to, and you've spent the whole game practicing never getting hit, so it kind of ends up being a little unnecessary.

SilentSeph posted...
The snow boots also don't grant cold resistance or trigger any set bonuses.

In this case, it actually does make some sense. Cold resistance only has two tiers, so you can max it out with only the Snowquill hat and chest. That leaves choosing between snow boots for mobility or the third Snowquill piece for freeze immunity, which I think is a reasonable strategic choice.

SilentSeph posted...
Why not just combine these together, or let any combo of 'cold' related armor trigger set bonuses?

That said, I also kind of agree with this. I wouldn't mind seeing something more along the lines of Monster Hunter's approach to armour (at least the classic one), where each piece contributes a certain amount of points to a couple of different potential buffs, and accumulating enough points to exceed a threshold would grant you that buff. It would have to be simpler than MH's approach (which is a little obscure), but it would give the potential to increase the amount of skill points an armour offered as you upgraded it and give more mix-and-match potential as the game went on. I like that idea better than tying major bonuses to using armour from the same set, and it would allow something like Frostbite giving lots of Cold Weather Attack and a little bit of Cold Resist, with Snowquill reversing that, letting you pick which one you wanted.

I feel like weapons should be permanent (and rarer) and then fused materials should be the only part that breaks (if we really insist the breaking thing is needed). Now I just have twice as much shit that breaks for the same result.

Exactly. Hoarding Lynel horns to fuse to the best stuff? Fine. Hoarding Lynel horns and hoarding the best weapons I can find to fuse together and only ever use when really needed? Not so fine. Just give us upgrade lines for permanent weapons (whether by finding new ones or by upgrading what we have) to keep that progression, then fuse breakable items (or, better yet, use those items to craft temporary buff items, which is less contrived than fusing stuff and having it break off) to increase attack power and/or add special effects. That, or really go all-out on the improvised weaponry angle and let us fuse together multiple items to craft weapons with the properties we want.

Yep. I've currently got the Sky Sword and Biggoron Sword taking up space in my inventory because I haven't gotten around to getting the house yet (I didn't have the spare cash the last time I was in Tarrey Town, and now that I've got the money I just haven't made it back there yet). They are replaceable if they do break, since Bargainer statues sell them (but only the Depths ones, not the convenient one in Lookout Landing), but for weapons that don't have good enough stats to really be worth the poes, they're really just keepsakes.

This is also where transmogs would come in handy, since I like the visual variety of having so many different weapons to choose from and kind of having a reason to use things other than the best available option (even if it's only because the best option will sometimes break before you can find a replacement), but the excessive difficulty of replacing the interesting weapon designs when they break makes it very unattractive to actually use them.

Yep. Especially a breakable weapon that's barely distinguishable from the Master Sword. It does mean you can just spend some poes as needed to get a decently powerful weapon, which is a plus if you somehow find yourself completely out of useful weapons, but it's still thoroughly anticlimactic, which is the same problem weapon rewards had in BotW.

I'm reaching the point (as I inevitably do with almost all open world games) where I'm likely going to finish the main quest out of spite and leave it at that.

I've done three temples, explored all but two of the regions fairly thoroughly, and explored about half the underground. I have near zero interest in going through the rest of the underground or doing all these various sidequests that offer no reward or narrative hook.
