Yeah those are so much better than the tests of strength in BotW. Any time I found one of those I was like "oh, this, again?" but any time I found the eventides I'm like "oooh, yay these are fun!"

I feel the "this again?" for both of them, eventide ones are just as formulaic as the tests of strength. Grab starting items, kill the first few enemies, take their weapons, attach their headgear to arrows and headshot a few more enemies (if it gave you a bow), fuse whatever's around to your weapons, and then finish up the remainder. Eventide was fun because it was unique and it wasn't just about killing all the enemies.

Thats if you brute force them. Ive been trying to do whatever the shrine wants me to do. For the vehicle one, I drove the vehicle and ran everything over. For the trap one, I used some of the traps, like light the ground of fire after luring them over. For the water one, I pulled the boat from under them and let them drown. For the auto-fighters, I built death machine to go after the enemies, including the fire and cannon ones When you just go in attacked all of them the same way, they will feel exactly the same. But if you use the stuff around, they feel a little more unique There were only a few I wasnMt fond of, but even they werent too bad

Yeah, most of the eventide-style ones have some opportunity to do something more interesting than fighting them head-on. It may not be optimally efficient, but having the opportunity to drive around a giant death machine or deploy an army of killer robot tanks with no regard for battery limits is pretty fun. I find myself consistently thinking "ooh, what will I get to do this time?" whenever I find one.

Granted, Subnautica's land movement is kinda janky, which I guess just reflects that control schemes that work for land movement don't necessarily work for water and vice versa.

Which isn't doable in ER, since it is gated by Smithing Stones, which are finite and very hard and time consuming to hunt down. You basically have to gamble on a style and stick with it. One of the (many) frustrating and poorly designed aspects of ER.

I've only done the Wind Temple so far, and I kind of feel that.

The design of a giant floating ark is kickass and feels epic, but the interior is a pretty lame copy and paste of the same art design, and it's pretty damn empty. It's a ship so I guess it makes sense to not have a "temple-y" design, but finding 6 wind machines to power also felt like a let down. Whereas the Divine Beasts didn't feel like temples, but had temple-like mechanic (i.e., rotate the entire building to solve the puzzle, etc.).

That said, the boss was epic, if easy.

That applies to most Souls games, I find. There's a ton of build variety, but because of how stats and weapon upgrades work, trying to switch builds mid-run often doesn't work very well and/or requires significant compromises. It makes them very beginner-unfriendly because they don't give much room to play around with different builds before settling on one, and if you start out without a clear direction in mind you can pretty severely gimp your character. Fortunately, build guides are everywhere and it's easy to get that direction so your first run doesn't end up needing to be restarted, and once you know what you're doing pivoting a build mid-run or making one up on the fly is certainly quite possible, but there's still definitely a lack of build flexibility there.

This is incorrect, not only are most low-mid level Smithing stones common rewards for exploration, you can find the special items that allow shops to sell an infinite amount of them except for the final tier which isn't at all needed for a first playthrough anyway. You'd know this if you simply progressed past the first area.

Try again.

After you find items/quests that actually unlock that ability, and even then they can be pricey and require a grind. It's a lot of gatekeeping and grind for something that the game dangles in front of you as an exciting key feature. Ergo, the original pointing out that you can switch up your build in ER needs a lot of contextualization to merit even brining up.

Basically, ER did a poor job of managing the "ass load of crap" factor of an open world game.

once you've gotten to the point where you can start reliably purchasing stones, the only thing gatekeeping you is your own willingness to actually do it.

there's also ng+ where you just restart but keep everything, which is where most people, i think, start actually buildcrafting

imo it's really a non-issue once you get to the point where you'd even want to try switching.

also, i feel like the majority of people going into a souls game tend to understand how the games work and go from there. elden ring probably had the most people going in not knowing a dick damn thing about the style of game, but it seems to have worked out

I'd disagree, since I found plenty of weapons I wanted to try and switch to on my first run, but knew doing so would be a massive time suck, and that's to see if I even LIKED the different weapon/style. It was a bummer to constantly find cool looking stuff and knowing it'd take a lot of work to get it up to snuff. For a game where stats, styles, weight burden, and relation to stamina drastically effect everything related to combat, it desperately needed some sort of testing arena/zone to help try builds, styles, and min-maxing out.

And while I know that about ng+, of course, it's hard to argue a game is well designed when it only feels like it works as intended AFTER investing 100+ hours and beating the game once to get to that point.

ConfusedTorchic posted...

I agree, but to a point. What we know call "Souls-like" is the main draw of playing those games. That said, ER is the 6th iteration of this formula (if we count Demon Souls), so it's really run out of excuses to be shoddy in so many ways (don't even get me started on the map, the aiming, the glitches, etc.).

ConfusedTorchic posted...

Devil Advocating and arueging with yourself ain't that uncommon the longer the thread goes and with more people added, heh. :P That said, going back to the main point, I think it's easy to argue that ER handles the "throw a lot of bullshit at you" aspect of an open-world game way worse than BotW/TtoK does.

I got on today like yeah, Im gonna finish my battery wells!. On the way to my first miniboss I ran into Ferosh, so I said well I do need to farm dragon parts so I just farmed dragon parts for four hours. Nice thing is dragons dont despawn, they are always loaded in, they are always progressing their tracks. So once you get a part you just grab onto a back spike and just wait 10 minutes for the dragon to be ready again. Holding onto the dragon does not spend stamina.
