there are things you might not "get" due to not being black, but there are issues that other minority groups that black people might not "get" due to not generally experiencing them.

it doesn't mean that "most black people" don't believe other minority groups don't go through similar issues.

In addition, lots of contect in black culture talk about "passing" which in essence is, our experience isn't the same.
when people talk about "passing", they mean passing for white, which has been advantageous throughout history; especially through slavery and Jim Crow.

Well that's some bullshit for them to say. To racists, it doesn't matter your skin tone. They follow the one drop rule very closely.

# 21 must be horrible for black people.

Even as a white guy, because I'm young-ish, I get a lot of shit if I end in the ER for one reason or the other. "Oh, you're injured? Take some fucking tylenol, why would we prescribe you anything even if you're screaming in pain on top for your lungs?"

Any harmless question is met with suspicion. Got a bad case of pneumonia? (some editorializing added for humor purposes):

Doctor - "Here's your motherfucking directions: Mucinex, motherfucker"
Me: "but, it's quite clear I got an infection, you said it yourself, pneumonia..."
Doctor - "oh. Oh. And what would you have me give you? Some painkillers? Huh? Huh? I bet you'd like that ;) "
Me - "No, I was thinking, you know, antibiotics..."
Doctor - "talk to your GP for that. Ok, gotta go, bye!"

^ this really happened to me (somewhat editorialized for humor purposes), The main point is this asshole sort of suggested I was asking for painkillers because, according to him, I must be a druggie (note for clarification: Obviously I'm NOT a druggie, this is why I was so offended). Yeah, because getting pneumonia and coughing fucking green goo thick as spaghetti to the point you even bleed, while having a fever is surely the most efficient and cheapest way to score some drugs, from an E.R., of all places. I was so fucking pissed.

Imagine what a black person has to go through.... as you can tell I have a really bad opinion of health professionals because of some stories like this one that happened to me personally

I think what you're talking about is related to colorism, which can be as much of an issue within the black community as it is without.

"passing", in relation to black people, refers to a black person (who's most likely biracial/multi-racial) who can pass for white.

I'm not sure that's how the phrase works, but it's not inaccurate.

"Passing privilege" typically means people who look closer to a societal "mainline" than others in their community.

Comes up in biracial and trans circles a lot.

I've never heard it used in terms of getting "a pass," I think I've heard that described more as "light-skinned privilege" but I'm not an encyclopedia.

If its to an extent, then again.

Its not bullshit. Stop disagreeing just because it sounds the most pleasant.

There is a difference in treatment between light skin folks and dark skin. Its why theres a sizable group of people who dislike when a historically darker person gets casted as a light skin black person.

Its frustrating because you cant complain otherwise youll get goons claiming are they not black enough? completely missing the point.

I personally agree that a light skin black person wont completely get the dark skin experience. Its just not important enough to bring up when you have racists bigots out there who only want white.

When ordering food have a white friend (especially a female) do the ordering.

If reserving a hotel room over the phone have a white friend make the reservation and then add your name as a roomate. (unless you like being assigned a first floor room or being grouped with the "sketchy" guests who they want to keep an eye on.)

Make a donation, even if its just $1, to a local or state police/public safety cause and they'll usually send you a sticker you can put in your back window.

Get a pair of non prescription glasses for walking around in stores. It's like the Superman/Clark Kent effect but in reverse.

That's another sad thing about the subjectivity of racism--my brother is half-black but in the U.S. that just means he's black. Same with Obama. Back in the day, you were considered black if you had 1/8th African heritage and I don't think that concept has changed at all in the last century...

Also told me to avoid specific towns and to not stop there unless it was for gas. And even then, I would have to be quick about it and immediately get back on the highway.

I remember reading some blog that some black dude had some years ago.
I dont remember much of it, except that he once visited Egypt with a black friend.
It was hot and they saw people buying slices of watermelons that they ate in public. After having a long talk, they decided to buy a slice each. They looked around nervous, saw that nobody cared and ate it. It tasted great.
They wrote that they never dared buying watermelons at home in USA because of that stereotype.

all of those rules are true, to some extent; whether they happened to the individual directly or indirectly.

and it's not just about "thinking everyone is racist", it's more about avoiding potentially dangerous situations, by either doing things to keep yourself out of drama and/or trying to appear less of a threat.

This. Growing up black in America is a different experience, I understood all of that list and use some of the tactics.

If we're assertive then we're loud and aggressive. If we speak in AAVE, Kouri-vini, or Gullah then we're "ghetto and uneducated". We have to take into account medical racism, black women's mortality rate during childbirth is three times more likely than their white counterparts. We all have the talk to our children when it comes to the police, etc. We have to make plans to avoid sundown towns, multiple Confederate flags is a no go. It's a lot of shit that are in the back of our minds when we are in certain situations, that didn't just appear from the aether, it's from centuries of anti-black racism that perpetuates.

On the receipt one, I also make it a point to buy something when I go to a store so it doesn't appear that I'm just walking in and out. Roy Wood Jr. talked about this during a bit in his special, every black person in the audience knew that he was talking about.

#11 kills me inside. It's a reaction to (anticipated) racism from everyone you meet. Someone either is 'too black' or 'not black enough'. It's heartbreaking to see someone constantly having to judge themselves and feeling they have to act a specific way in front of other people.

Also, sundown towns are a very real thing.

I'm from the Deep South and the next town up the road had signs up warning that if you weren't white and were out after dark, that there were lynch mobs that'd kill you. Straight up.

While I can't say that is quite the case anymore, the area is a little bit more modern nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if there were still some racist fucks willing to engage in what their 'grandpappies' got up to.

Because things like keeping your receipt is basic common sense, lol, and has nothing to do with race. Lots of people don't like the idea of letting their kids play with guns too.

This board is unreal. Get off the internet and go out into the world.

Usually because they feel called out in some way. That they'll be judged or are being judged as racist for things they perceive as not applicable to them or are out of their control.

It's a complex issue and many people don't think that they are, or even could be, racist, while engaging in (subtly) racist behaviors that they don't even realize are racist or engage in behaviors that could at least be perceived as racist (even if it is not their intent).

Take the 'compliment' "You're so articulate!" for example. On the surface, the deliverer may mean 100% no harm in the use of it and may be an actual intended compliment because few people to nobody in the deliverer's life is well-spoken or articulate. While in reality, the comment is insensitive at best and outright racist at worst. It can be/is read as that the recipient is an outlier or exception and that being articulate is not the expectation (of people of the recipients race)

If someone calls the deliverer out, the deliverer may become indignant or defensive because they, truly, didn't mean any harm but now they're being 'attacked' for a comment they viewed as innocent.
