The combat is good... great, balanced, lots of twists and turns

Music, visuals and plot all bog standard... if it weren't for the 3D or Voice Acting the game woulda fit in right in the late NES/early SNES era. Nothing in the game pushes any boundaries; it's just... another RPG

Now, one could argue that being so grossly dated could make it cozy... but I will counter with fire and you have to skip your turn.

The map design is terrible and the combat is easily abusable. Also having eight seperate stories was a terrible idea. And fuck the hidden mega boss for basically having a "fuck you, you're all dead" ability he could randomly do. And dying to him put you back at the beginning where you have to fight 8 pre-bosses who are all piss easy but take forever to kill.

I fucking hate the Bravely Default/Octopath Traveler battle systems. On paper they're fine but unless you load up turns everything you do is so gimped and shitty. So then you load up and spend a bunch of time doing nothing after doing one meaningful action. It eventually sort of balances out for encounters but boss battles are bad.

The writing is also so awful for all of those games. Triangle Strategy included. The Huntress character in Octopath is the one that I remember the most specifically as being written by complete idiots (I-eth must-eth talk-eth like-eth this-eth) but the entire script of all those games felt like it was written by very ambitious high schoolers.

I love Lord Jesus, Family Matters (for Steve & Laura which I typed up a beautiful alt from Just One Date episode) and FFIX (for Zidane & Garnet).

I enjoyed it by the end,but begrudgingly so. Square Enix has such a stale formula especially for battles

There's an ability that gives you background info on townspeople and one of them had 1 or 2 short sentences in english and I switched it to spanish and it was like an essay for the exact same person. I was like wtf!! Tressa's mom is another good example.

it's a very stylistically pretty game visually, but nothing else stood out for me when i tried it out. i even started as best girl tressa

i haven't played it yet but live a live remake doing the same thing but better probably pushes it down even further

I mostly liked it, but relegating the only story information that ties the eight different stories together to a text lore dump at the very end of an obscure sidequest that also happens to be the gateway to the true ending with zero indication anywhere else that there's even a true ending to get was decidedly not a great decision. My understanding is that the sequel does better in that regard, but I haven't played it yet.

Bravely Second rules but a lot of the attempts to make new old final fantasy games kind of suck ass in one way or another. BS is just great though. Love it

That is weird but why skip side quests at all?

ok, first time around the side quests were nice; I like helping people and figuring out what they need to be helped.

Then by my 3rd character I noticed everyone needs help from someone 3 steps away from them

That's better than having to go all the way across a map.

Because they don't give useful rewards, because they don't seem like they'll tell particularly interesting subplots, because without the drive of the main story giving the whole thing a point you run out of steam to finish anything that isn't building toward something larger, because you just tend not to care about being a completionist, because you just missed them and don't care enough to comb the world to make sure nothing else is hiding anywhere... there are plenty of reasons why one might not end up doing enough sidequests to find the true ending, especially where there are quite a few different prerequisites and you aren't clearly told where to go to find the next set of quests that need to be completed. I fully expect that there were many players who just never saw the true ending before walking away from the game, not for a lack of skill or desire to see it, but because they didn't look up enough information about the game to even know it was there, and that's just not good design when the true ending is what actually relates the eight stories to each other.

the overlapping narratives of the multitude of characters could have been done better... infact, I don't think Primrose's plot is even related to the main plot!

They all do relate to it eventually, but for some of them it's a little more contrived than others, and most or all of that relation hides in the endgame lore dump.

I gave up on it. I started with rose and the fact they'd allude to some dark shit going on in her life made me take interest. After that it started to slowly fall apart and bore me.

Hers is technically the best narratively, but it's not a high standard considering how awful the bunch of stories are
