Oh a magic date passes and then you can be pulled over for not paying money to get a new magic date. Or in this case I need to either drive 6 hours to my parents to get my new license or have my dad mail it and not be able to drive for some days.

I get mad enough about the drivers license, then again about registering the car...the state needs $60 every 12 months for me to remind them I own my car?

Nevermind the two professional licenses I have to keep active, those are over $100 apiece every two years for the right to have my job, I guess

What 2 licenses do you have?

I have a PE and my workplace reimburses me for it

It's to pay for the roads that you drive on.

They actually need to make people take a test during the renewal process, so many shitty drivers on the road.

It's technically one pharmacy license and a separate pharmacy "registration" through the state, but I lump them together as one giant licensure pain in my ass.

I haven't had to renew since I started my newest job but it's coming up, I'll ask them about reimbursement. It's really less about the money and more about the annoyance for me, idk. I just don't like being bothered. Those renewals are definitely more important than my stupid car registration.

Oh fuck off. It'd be one thing if they just took it out of paychecks. The license renewal system creates an enormous amount of bureaucracy and costs from licenses and worker salaries to process all that shit. Not to mention an excuse for cops to harass people.

lol the last time this was suggested in a topic about this exact thing, it had people saying "That's not fair to the bad drivers like me, who would fail the test and not be able to drive anymore!"

Congratulations, numbnuts, you've identified the exact point

Oh so the registration, not your driver's license?

That's super easy to take care of. They mail you the registration paperwork like 2 months ahead of time. Just go online and pay it, then it gets mailed to you. If you're waiting until right before it expires, then that's on you.

And they make you renew that so that they can attempt to keep track of where the registered owner lives. I used to do office work at CHP and there were a surprising number of hit and run drivers that had registration that was never updated to their new address (so officers couldn't find the driver)

Same thing with your driver's license really. Keep the address up to date or it's a ticket.

That isn't how it works. At all. The more roads are used the more they have to spend on them. The only way to do this is to tax based on # of drivers and type of car. Otherwise someone who has a "stay at home" job could be taxed for the sake of road upkeep.

And the act of the government creating "unnecessary" jobs is irrelevant. Unless capitalism is overthrown, or whatever, both that at the complaint about the police is merely conflating two issues.

Wait, license plates expire? Is that only in certain states? Because this is the first Ive heard of that.

Also, why do you have to drive to your parents house to do that?

I did read it. You ended the OP with that correction, so I assumed you were correcting the title to say "renewing your license plate is a fucking scam" which would mean that whole rant is about your registration.

I'm assuming your parents are the registered owners, so that's why the paperwork goes to them, but you can take care of it online, so there you go, next year you don't have to make a 6 hour drive to take care of it

I pay 30 bucks a year and can do it online for two years at a time. A few months ahead of time I get a piece of mail saying it's going to expire. I go online to the DMV website, renew it, and print out the new form. We don't have registration stickers or anything anymore in the state. Couldn't be easier.

Is it a scam? I dunno. I don't like paying for it though.

It gets worse if your car is new. My renewal costs $414. Just got my tags in the mail. They don't expire until mid June, but why wait, you know.

In my state (California) there are two stickers on your rear plate, one for the month your car was originally registered and one for the year that is currently paid for. The month sticker always stays the same, but every year you have to pay for the sticker for the following year. So paying this year will get you a 2024 sticker to replace your 2023 one
