Apparantly this is the Russian incentive program.

their hypersonic missiles dont work so well against western anti air tech so putin had them arrested for treason.

maybe Russia should stick to what it is actually good at producing. Girl on girl porn.

ya, turns out sub-sonic munitions work just fine against supersonic missiles since we know trigonometry

And that kids is why you don't embellish what your product is capable of to a deranged dicktator.

it probably wasn't embellished, it's just that putin thinks everyone is stuck in the 1990s military-wise like they are

so while they might not have been able to do anything if someone sent one at them

to the rest of the world it's really a non-issue

now, super-sonic torpedos COULD be a threat until we develop fast underwater lasers

not even really a laser, just a higher powered flechette gun

i mean for detection, since I would guess that speed of sound sonar can't go faster than the speed of sound (underwater), so intercepting a super-sonic torpedo would be impossible via sonar alone...

but for air we got lasers

Supersonic torpedoes are impossible due to the incompressability of water. Water is 830 times more dense than air, so a torpedo would have to be made of such incredibly thick material there would be no room for a warhead. Or motor for that matter. And it would weigh so much that it would sink.

Even the world's fastest boat, the Spirit of Australia, could only do 329 mph. And that was skimming across the top of the water, not submerged like a torpedo. And that was using a 3000 lb thrust Westinghouse J34 jet engine. And that was in 1978, nobody has managed to beat that in 45 years.

The current fastest torpedo is the Russian VA-111 Shkval, which can hit 230 mph. This requires a rocket motor to propel it, and it has a maximum range of 9 miles, compared to the Russian Type 65 which has a range of 60 miles at 35 mph.

If you could hypothetically develop a supersonic torpedo, what kind of effect would that have on the ocean? Would there be a sonic boom? Would that hurt marine life? Would the water displacement cause a tidal wave? Or would it not have any noticeable affect?

And would any military on the planet give a shit if it did?

Would there be a sonic boom? Yes. A sonic boom is just a pressure wave generated by something moving, and when it is close to or at the speed of sound, the waves overlap and merge, as they are also travelling at the speed of sound. An object moving at supersonic speeds underwater would result in the same effect - however, because water is largely incompressible, the pressure wave would be more damaging than the over-air equivalent.

Would it be harmful to marine life? Yes - potentially fatally so, if they're close enough. Again, it's a pressure wave, so it will behave like any other pressure wave in an incompressible medium.

Would the water displacement cause a tidal wave? No - not unless you were somehow launching this from very, very deep underwater (and generating enough energy to have a supersonic missile under that much pressure is well beyond what our technology is capable of - honestly, something that can go supersonic speeds underwater is already beyond our tech level, but doing so that deep underwater adds an even greater level of difficulty). Tidal waves are largely based on the volume of water displaced, not the speed at which it is displaced, so the fact that your torpedo is moving really, really fast isn't any more likely to result in a tidal wave than a speedboat doing the same thing.

even if someone did develop a hypersonic torpedo with some new as of yet undiscovered metal alloy and propulsion system it woild take far less time to train sharks and equip them with lasers on their heads to shoot them.

It's been their incentive program for almost 100 years now. It's how the Soviet Union used to deal with failure as well.
