BlueCrystalTear week:
Weird Al Yankovic - Mandatory Fun
vs.
Queen - A Night at the Opera
vs.
Mariah Carey - Mariah Carey

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_3

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, May 21 at 4:00 PM Central Time; the future week poll will close earlier, when I am putting up the next topic
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle (a new user will be added to the end of the current cycle as long as there are four weeks remaining) - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.
8. Starting with the next cycle, every four weeks will be a competitive week where those listed choose a single album to face off against others.
9. Skits and tracks under 40 seconds will be excluded from the rankings unless argued otherwise

BlueCrystalTear on his album choices:

I've already nominated other albums from these artists, but, seriously, WHY haven't we done something from any of these three yet?

Weird Al Yankovic - Mandatory Fun
Since Straight Outta Lynwood got rejected in a competitive week, I've felt I'd nominate another of Al's best albums here. It was either this or Off the Deep End and I opted for the more recent of the two, which contains hit parodies "Word Crimes" and "Tacky" but also a plethora of great originals and the usual polka fare.

Queen - A Night at the Opera
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Need I say more?

Mariah Carey - Mariah Carey
Mimi's first album was what turned her into a hit factory, producing four #1s and establishing a career that would last over 25 years before a New Years' Eve concert flub caused her to Fade Away. (I'm pretty sure you guys won't pick this, but we've had a sincere lack of balladeers and I thought Mariah would be the least objectionable.)

I decided to listen to this album. Only after I finished did I think to check the date on this topic to make sure it was still active. Phew, it's still the beginning. I'm gonna rank this one, probably after I do a full second listen in a few days. (I like doing this topic, just lost motivation to listen to weekly albums for a couple months since my last one)

Also, my YouTube playlist was accidentally on autoplay and it started playing a different song afterwards which was really cool, but not part of this album. I'm gonna have to check out that album after this...

I feel you there. I've felt the same way for a few months myself. But since my week is up for voting... better get back into this.

Tagging for a listen tomorrow.

First listen done.

Not sure I was really feeling it. The album felt kind of...simple? I don't know. Something about it was kind of videogame-y or just had me saying "yeah, I could see why GFAQs users might like this". It's a tough place to be when, in just this cycle, we've covered Grimes and Caroline Polachek.

Cute album. It is a bit on the simplistic side, so it's not really something that wowed me at any point, but it was fun to listen to.

While my two favorite Kero Kero Bonito songs are found elsewhere, Bonito Generation is a really fun & easy listen, clocking in at under 40 minutes start to finish. Half the songs on this album could be summer radio hits, so it's hard to sort. Most of KKB's catalog is very danceable in a live setting - got to see them about 4 years ago and it was a blast.

1) Fish Bowl - I think this is the song Sarah is singing about in 'Heard a Song' - I had the part at 0:50 stuck in my head for a while before I was able to go back and find the song it was from. Could easily be twice as long, but like many great songs, leaves you wanting more.
2) Big City - the very first KKB song I ever heard. Pretty much heard it by accident - my friend was playing 'Minimall radio' on Spotify/Pandora/something (an all-girl band formerly called 'Titty Hall' who used to do Tally Hall covers) and this song came on. I was hooked immediately.
3) Graduation - 0:43 lap complete. 2:06 goes hard.
4) Break - much like their music, a simple but great video idea
5) Waking Up
6) Try Me
7) Picture This
8) Trampoline - crazy that this isn't even in my top half, it has hit single written all over it
9) Hey Parents
10) Lipslap - another good video, I would watch this sitcom
11) Paintbrush
12) Heard a Song - my lowest-rated song is still like a 7/10

Fish Bowl - This song doesn't feel like a typical "short song" to me. It feels like a full length song that's just missing a minute or two from the end. Listening to it, I can try to pretend that it's longer and isn't about to abruptly end. This made it the hardest song to rank. I do like what's there and in this case I'm not letting its duration hold it back, even though I wish it kept going past 1:45. (I debated ranking it even higher, although the songs that I ranked above it deserve those spots too)

Simple, saccharine, amateur. Those are some of the words that came to mind as I was trying to figure out why this album was rubbing me the wrong way.

Then I figured it out. This album feels like the soundtrack to some lost Disney Channel show, where the lead singer is the quirky Japanese girl that goes to live it England and gets up to some G/PG related high jinks with her 2 new best friends. (Just to be clear, I know the singer is originally from Japan and then lived in England.) Most of these songs feel like things she'd burst out singing, one per episode, while some slightly bewildered students or family members look on.

.....I mean if you extrapolated the Lipslap video into an actual show, then I'd agree, but for the album as a whole I think you're selling it very short

As others have said, it's goofy, cute, and simple. However, the lyrics for most songs are pretty universally relatable. Also I love that the Japanese rapping is at a speed where the only things I'm not understanding are words I just don't know. "I speak in different languages and people get what I mean" indeed.
