Which of these are you MOST interested in?

Yes, I purposefully left Spider-Verse off the poll, because I assume it would win. And yes, the new Mission Impossible movie has four colons in it.

Did you know that Fast X comes out in ten days? I feel like the hype's gone.

Came in to post this, Rogue Nation and Fallout were both so good and still hold up great on rewatches. More hyped for the new one than I probably should be.

last Indiana Jones 5 trailer rekindled some interest but could just be a well-cut trailer/nostalgia bait, definitely going to wait for reviews/word of mouth before spending any money on that.

I've found the post-Ghost Protocol MIs a bit disappointing. Good movies, just not awesome or anything.

I'm not super excited by this set. Oppenheimer probably highest on the priority list.

Okay, lets look at this list:

Fast X - Ill be honest, this looks bad. While 5-7 were really good the series has been going downhill since and the trailers for this give me no confidence. Jason Momoa looks fun though.

The Little Mermaid - This probably wont be terrible but I just find all the Disney live action remakes thoroughly uninteresting after about 2016. They took the wrong lessons from the success of Cinderella/The Jungle Book/Petes Dragon. The casting looks pretty good to the dismay of online weirdos though, and they seem to have gotten people that can actually sing. Also, why does it look so dark? Its colour graded like a gritty action movie.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - Strangely optimistic about this one. The trailers look good, its got a good director, its following on from the well received Bumblebee and it seems to be taking the franchise in the right direction. Unfortunately the trouble I have is that my interest in a Transformers film has completely faded by this point. I wish that films like this were coming out 15 years ago rather than whatever Bay was doing. The right film probably, but too late.

Elemental - Not really been keeping up with this one, but its Pixar so it will probably hit a baseline of at least pretty good. Looking at Pixars recent output its not that their films have gotten worse but that other animation studios caught up and so Pixar dont feel quite as special any more. To which point as you note Across the Spider-verse is missing from the poll but would challenge my number 1 if it was in there.

The Flash - Somebody wished for a great Flash movie on a monkeys paw and this happened. All signs are this is great, and Im looking forward to seeing it. Hard to ignore a certain star giving me bad feelings though. Should be good but that mutes my hype a little.

Indiana Jones 5 - I think people are sleeping on this one a bit after Crystal Skull. This film looks *really* promising and we wont need to wait long to find out if its good because it will be at Cannes with no embargo. The word though is that it certainly will be.

Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning: Part One - First of all, thats three colons. Second of all, these films are all great from 4 on, the best running blockbuster franchise for sure, with this one seeming like no exception. This got my vote.

Oppenheimer - The trailers look stunning, its Nolan going back to a more restrained mode with source material no less, but keeping his recent bombast at the same time. You know the explosion is going to be a true cinematic experience, I hope he tries to outdo Lynch and go all the way over the top. It was a tough choice between this and Mission Impossible for my vote.

Blue Beetle - This looks good and looks like the Shazam follow-up we should have gotten earlier this year. I am concerned that it does look a bit like a streaming movie put on the big screen though.

The others all seem interesting too but Im waiting for reviews.

Overall seems like a solid lineup and the best summer blockbuster lineup for quite a while. Could be the best since 2017 maybe? Though obviously you need to account for the pandemic too.

Definitely gonna see Oppenheimer (fun fact: they were shooting on UC Berkeley's campus, including, I believe, directly below my office. Unfortunately I was out of town at the time and couldn't stealthily take any pictures!)

Possible I'll see Barbie if it gets good reviews since I like Gerwig, Robbie, and Gosling

They are screening it at Cannes and doing press screenings with no embargo a month in advance. It also has apparently been testing really well. Add to that Mangolds record and it looks pretty good especially in the light of that last trailer being very positively received.

Will only be watching the DC films here. Not saying they'll be the best ones in here, but realistically I just know that's what's gonna happen, I don't watch a lot of movies.

I have cooled a ton on Nolan which is a real shame. When everyone was heaping praise on Dunkirk I felt like I was crazy, I almost fell asleep and would have walked out if I wasn't with a friend. However I have enjoyed the conspiracy theories that Oppenheimer is going to secretly be some time traveling insanity movie that's hiding it all from the marketing.

The much more likely conspiracy theory is that the main focus of the film will be Oppenheimers life after the war.

My guess with Oppenheimer judging from the book and the trailers is that the movie will be split into two halves, the first half in colour before the bomb and the second half in black and white dealing with how Oppenheimer regretted it all.

I think you should watch Tenet since that is much more classic Nolan in style than Dunkirk or Interstellar. Oppenheimer looks like a whole new mode for him entirely.

Star Trek Beyond was good! Definitely a lot better than the awful first trailer and definitely the best live action blockbuster that season (Civil War doesnt count, thats a spring movie). Jason Bourne though man, what a disappointment. Same for The BFG, X-Men Apocalypse, Suicide Squad There were a lot of promising looking blockbusters that wound up being not good, and a lot of not good looking blockbusters that wound up being not good.

Some really good mid-budget movies though! Still a shame nobody went to see The Nice Guys as that movie is great.
