i wouldn't expect backwards compatibility for the next one either

Nintendo's made it pretty clear that they'll only do that now if they can charge you money for it

How have they made that clear? Up until the Switch - which physically can't be backwards compatible with any other systems due to its fundamental design concept - every handheld has been backwards compatible by at least one generation, and the Wii and WiiU did the same (the GC also physically could not have been expected to). To my knowledge, they haven't announced anything on the matter, so aside from their general reluctance to make old games available digitally (which is generally quite bothersome) the only reason I might expect not to see backwards compatibility next generation would be if they change up the storage medium such that Switch cards won't work.

If it counts, I had the GC adapter that went on the bottom and let you play gbc / gba games.

And you don't believe that "this might be something cool we can add to BotW" can evolve into "this concept could be the basis for a whole new game" as the team worked on it? I don't doubt that the idea started as DLC, I just don't know why people are so obsessed with that fact when it means pretty much nothing about whether or not the game as a whole is robust enough to stand alone.
That and MM literally just reused all of OoT's assets and managed to make a remarkable and very different game off of it. I.e., even if the DLC claim is true, not sure what the point is. Or where people are getting the no dungeon and weapons stuff.

Playing Kirby's Tilt n' Tumble on the GB player was a delightfully idiotic experience.

I always give OoT the edge, because it's a "traditional" Zelda game, and generally is longer and has more stuff to see and do than MM.

But I put MM right up there for the opposite reason- how different and dark it is, the insane music, the atypical combat with masks, etc. They are both very different games in ways, which makes me.love both equally. Or nearly equally.

I can fully agree with this. MM is a very different sort of Zelda game, and while I love it through and through, I can understand why somebody who wants a more traditional Zelda might not be a huge fan of it.

That said, the people that hate the time limit because it pressures them too much just need to git gud.

Picked up a copy. I actually had to hunt for it a bit; when I went to the mall there was a sizable line outside of Gamestop and from the website it looked like they didn't have any non-preorder copies available, and the other store in the mall that might have sold it also suggested on the website that they didn't have it, so I ended up driving a bit further to get one from Best Buy. I honestly can't remember the last time I had to try more than one store to get a game on launch day, though I guess I don't buy on launch very often.

PK_Spam posted...

Indeed not. "Contender" implies that another might qualify, and that's obviously nonsense.

I've owned it since release but haven't turned it on (crazy work and other bad life events).I'm in Denmark now so I won't even be able to do Zelda for another week.

It dethroned 1 as my favourite game ever. It's a good time. Opinions do vary quite a bit on it, though, and I can understand why. Delving into that debate would require extensive story spoilers, though, and this is not the place for that, nor would I want to rob you of the opportunity to experience them in-context.

2 is... complicated. Once the battle system comes into its own and you've got all the tools to work with and you've done the necessary grinding to bring all the better blades up to the point of being useful and you've looked up some online guides to take the place of the useless in-game tutorials, it's got a ton of strategic depth and build versatility and is just plain fun to play around with. It just takes bloody forever to get there and nothing about the main story experience actually encourages you to explore it beyond "DOUBLE SPINNING EDGE!", plus it's not intuitive enough for anyone to stumble on that depth without seriously trying to study it (which just means watching Enel's videos, for most people, but still). In the same vein, the story gets really interesting once it starts to focus on developing the characters meaningfully and exploring their motivations and the philosophical themes driving the whole game, but you're like 70-75% of the way through the game by the time you get to that.

There's a lot of really good stuff in 2, but the pacing is terrible and the anime tropes are a little too heavy-handed for me to really enjoy wading through them. I definitely still like it overall, but by contrast I quite prefer 1's more straightforward storytelling and gameplay pacing.

I think Im losing my touch. I dont know, this thing just isnt grabbing me at all, I dont have any desire to get it and thats mighty weird.

It just looks like more Breath of the Wild to me. Oddly enough if they made this look like Windwaker Id probably be first in line.

For you guys that have it already: Does it feel any different while playing it? Does it feel like BotW DLC?

Some of it is similar to Breath of the Wild. But thats because its a sequel. It would be weird if it wasnt similar. But there are still differences Adding more to the map is one. Not only are there more town and denser population and places in the main Hyrule land, but theres also above and below ground options There are more enemy varieties, as well Both new and old The fusing and building is new Which made for some interesting early korok seeds (Theyre still here giving out poop) Idk Its similar, but still different I heard someone on the TotK board say theyre enjoying this game, but hated BotW But it just comes down to preference

I concur. It's a good time so far, but I've definitely missed several jumps and taken several hits because I sprinted (putting away my shield in the process) instead of jumping. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually, but hoo boy is this non-standard.

Yes and no. The battle announcements aren't there anymore (though combos still manage to feel just as satisfying without it), but the same voice actor voices what is widely considered to be the best hero character (recruited NPC party members), so the announcer is still effectively around and providing much entertainment to all men of the sea.

i think L was to change weapons in BotW and up on the dpad was to change abilities. i love this game but the menus are bad and you spend like half of the time playing just cycling through menus.
