Very lame ending, could have just finished with the motorcycle chase and retained the sense that they would not fuck around with the story too much. But no, there had to be a battle with Sephiroth to end the game. -_- "Future is a blank page", changing also the past, Zack lives, etc.? What next, we'll have Aeris survive, too? For what it's worth, I saw some Japanese theory on YouTube that these might just be "alternate timelines" and the "main timeline" will remain the same as in the real game, but allow me to remain skeptical.

The presentation was beautiful, though, and I was really impressed how well this game ran - no stutters at all on 30 FPS at 1080p and almost constant 24+ FPS even at 4k on my now almost 7-year-old computer. That amazed me after the trouble I had to go through to get Final Fantasy XV to run well.

Really impressed with the character models, Tifa is more beautiful than even her Advent Children iteration. And her original clothes are a much better fit. I took over 1000 screenshots of which maybe a quarter are of Tifa. Countless things have changed over the years for me, but not my love for Tifa. :)

Good to know that I'm not the only one who felt the Sephiroth fight was unnecessary and out of place.

Given how Biggs somehow lived and we don't know if Wedge and Jessie died, it's definitely not the same timeline. Aerith might survive as well but that doesn't change how crazy her death in the original game was (that is not a spoiler btw).

The game is amazing nonetheless. I enjoyed the ride even if the conclusion felt weird. I'm glad they put a lot of effort into expanding Midgar and adding to the lore. None of that felt out of place. The presentation feels like the game was made by fans of the original, keeping the tone while improving the graphics to more modern standards.

And yes, Tifa's awesome, and this iteration of her shows that quite well - she's just the right mix of everything. Remake also has the best iteration of Aerith and I grew to like her a lot this time, a major upgrade from my prior indifference, and I think part of that was how she and Tifa complemented each other and still became friends. The voice acting nailed all the characters and brought them to life so we could see them in new ways, and as complete entities.

You may not have noticed, but they went out of their way to show that no civilians died. The only person who dies in the whole game is President Shinra, I think. Not saying that's a bad thing, but this comes across to me as an attempt to make a purely happy ending for the story.

I stand by the theory that Aerith still did but they just wanted to do things like this so they could make it shocking once again.

I can imagine Cloud dying in a huge swerve to make things crazy for players, but I'd be way more shocked if Aerith bites it again. Although, I stand by the 'everyone lives' ending.

Tifa and Aeris were pretty good friends in the original, too, but now with the enhanced visuals it makes a bigger impression.

Yeah, very lame, tbqh. Actually losing friends was one of the big things that made Final Fantasy VII so great.

(FFIV spoiler) And everyone magically surviving was one of the big things that made FFIV so bad.

Does the idea of being able to change the fate of the original FFVIIs timeline not appeal to you? Or do you just think that if its truly the case that this is a sequel and not a traditional remake, they should have marketed it as such?

The former, certainly. Haven't really thought about the latter. It's not a sequel per se. They're reusing the same storyline, essentially, just adding some stuff on top, most of which is meh at best.

Well its a sequel in the sense that Sephiroth and Aerith have prior knowledge of what happened in the original and are trying to change it in this timeline. Its not a sequel in a temporal sense, no, but the plot only makes sense if the original already happened

I should probably rephrase that to say that Sephiroth is trying to change it but Aerith is reluctant to but in the end realizes it has to happen.

The last 5% of the game is clear sequel bait & fanservice. They're gonna follow the original formula for the next game, but that's not exciting enough to sustain a 4-5 year mindshare gap between games.
