https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/may/02/anti-monarchists-receive-intimidatory-home-office-letter-on-new-protest-laws-coronation

  • Protesters who block roads, airports and railways could face 12 months behind bars.
  • Anyone locking on to others, objects or buildings could go to prison for six months and face an unlimited fine.
  • Police will be able to head off disruption by stopping and searching protesters if they suspect they are setting out to cause chaos.

Its worrying to see the police handed so many new powers to restrict protest, especially before a major national event. When the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act came into force, the police repeatedly misused them in part because they simply did not understand them. Similarly, when Queen Elizabeth died, we saw police acting in inappropriate and heavy-handed ways towards protesters that violated their rights.

Some key points from the article. Now, you cannot protest in ANY disruptive manner, block ANYONE in any manner, link arms with one another or even just be in the fucking vicinity of somewhere a protest MIGHT happen.

Yes. The police can detain you, without evidence, if they believe you might be 'causing a nuisance' or a protest might happen. They dont need evidence, but simply need to think it.

At this point, Britain has hit every single 'fascist' point in the 'going into fascism' bullet point list and shows no signs of slowing down.

And if this is meant to stop all the peaceful protest, why should they not just follow the French and burn it all down if they will face years of jail anyway?

Fuck the evil calling themselves Tories and fuck any Labour or Lib Dem who doesn't utterly condemn this.

Surely the right is up in arms about this blatant violation of the human right to free speech because surely this law would also apply to them under a right-wing government. Surely.

Motherfuckers are banning protest and we have people here going "Good! You don't have a right to use protest to inconvenience people! That's evil!"

There have been some strange moderations lately. Like when the thread from a couple days ago where OudeGeuze defended Metal Gear Solid 2 was deleted (and the account put in purgatory). It seems like if something can be misconstrued as trolling, they'll delete it.

As longer as you arent hindering transportation, ruining public events like concerts or harassing people at places like grocery stores, protest all you like. But people dont show this courtesy so thats why at least they are implementing it in the UK.

Fyi, the police here already could deal with said 'disruptive' protesters under former laws.

These laws are solely to crush any dissent. Coupled with recent laws to make it harder to vote I see no reason to not call the Tories openly fascist.

Yeah, citizens should have stakeholder relationship in state organizations so as to be able to lodge horizontal complaints. Protests by nature are not symmetrical and have to be balanced against public perception in addition. So while protesting is useful we need to level up

About damn time they stop these assholes from blocking traffic and preventing emergency vehicles from getting through. They need to fine them too not just give them jail time, make it clear that blocking the road is not acceptable.

Hard to believe they still celebrate the useless "Monarchy" over there, but it's not important enough to block traffic, disrupting people's livelihoods and potential emergencies.

I'm not exactly against disruptive protests, some issues are so ignored that there is literally no other way to spread awareness without forcing people to take notice. This sweeping declaration of power will hurt more than help in the long run.

No one gives a single shit about your cause when you block traffic, all it does is make them against anything you have to say and rightly drag your ass out of the way or if they are no fucks given they go through you and maybe you move or you get run over.

Protesters on the sidewalk actually do get support and noticed because they are showing their cause without being a problem so people want to know more.
