There are some interesting variants of Monopoly, including a version that encourages cheating (Monopoly: Cheaters Edition), a dice version that is actually pretty short (Don't Go To Jail), a card game (Monopoly Deal) and a version where you assemble a unique game board for each game (U-Build Monopoly).

Misery is the entire point of Monopoly though. It's like playing Diplomacy (which is a hugely well-loved game) - you go into it knowing someone's probably going to flip the board before it's over. There WILL be screaming. And possibly death threats.

When one player is screaming "COLLUSION!" at his wife for making uneven trade deals with other players to help blunt his rise, you're playing it right.

But the trick is, when you play with friends, everyone shrugs it off afterward. If your game is causing hurt feelings that last for a long time after, you may need to reconsider your friendships.

I've had great fun playing Monopoly by leaning in to the horror. I'll RP someone who will have a vendetta against you for the rest of the game because you picked the car as your piece before I could. Or making corrupt deals with other players to form alliances. Or secretly stealing thousands of dollars out of the bank and seeing if anyone notices. Or cackling like a supervillain while building hotels on Boardwalk. Or arguing over whether or not there should be any money under Free Parking (there shouldn't be, you fucking Philistines!).

I'm surprised at people here praising any of these games. Do you all not play board games anymore? Because they are all introductory games for kids, and have no real interaction in most cases.

Tic Tac Toe is solved, and too basic to not always play it solved. Operation is a simple dexterity game that is hard to lose after playing it once. All of the rest are RNG to different degrees...some to the point where they aren't even a game, because you aren't actually influencing anything.

The point to playing a game is having fun. Player agency can be integral to having fun, but doesn't dictate whether a player will have fun, or how much fun they can have

If you're incapable of having fun without having a larger influence over the gameplay, that's fine. Plenty of people can have fun just enjoying the social aspect of sitting down at a table and playing with other people

In that regard, sometimes the most fun can be had with games where you can just check out and enjoy the company while letting the dice or whatever determine the course of the game

Chess is pretty much solved as well (at least for multiple variations), and no one complains about that one.

This is the key. And it's telling that most of their worst games are games that generations of kids have played and enjoyed for decades. ie, relatively simple games that can serve as bonding experiences or just fun time-wasters.

Some people don't enjoy games where every player at the table needs to memorize a multi-volume rulebook to know which dice they roll when and how to position and move the 4,378 figures, meeples, resource markers, tokens, and fortifications and which of the four card piles you need to draw from during which of your 7 turn phases.

It's fine if some people do. Euro-style games can be fun to play, and they can even be fun to watch if your on YouTube and want to see another group plow through it. But some people just want to play a simple relaxed game with some friends while kicking back a couple drinks, and most Euro-style games would be absolute hell for them.

I mean, honestly, I think my friends and I have had more fun playing drunken Disney Charades than anything ever published by Ravensburger, or that's won the Spiel des Jahres. And as much as I've enjoyed watching TableTop or NRB's Board Game Club, I wouldn't dream of bringing 99% of those games to the table for my friends, because they'd hate most of them.

I'd argue that it might potentially be not fine, because it implies deeper issues all its own.

It's one thing to enjoy overcomplicated games. It's another to be completely incapable of enjoying anything but overcomplicated games.

When it comes to tabletop RPGs, I've spanned the gamut from Amber Diceless RPG (which almost borders on being completely freeform) all the way to TimeLords (a game which assigns multiple damage hitboxes to every creature, which contains rules that break down your real life physical condition and mental prowess to assign to stats so you can play as "yourself", and which pretty much requires you to understand rudimentary calculus to play). But if I ever met someone who could only play games like TimeLords, I'd start worrying about their mental health.

Randomness can be fun. Party games can be fun. Don't take my knock on these 10 games equating to me being exclusively on the other spectrum of euro-games. I like a variety of games. I just think people settling for these 10 games are doing a big disservice to themselves, because there are plenty of other light games with minimal rules that you can have fun with. BoardGameGeek also has plenty of random and light games highly ranked.

People saying "If you hate Candyland, it means you only love Gloomhaven, and hate simple fun!" sound to me like someone "If you hate Adam Sandler films, it means you only love Ingmar Bergman drama, and hate fun and all comedies!" It doesn't make much sense.

It's fine to enjoy the basics and never branch out. But people can't be surprised when others who have vast knowledge and experience verbally trash these.

True. But its also kind of dumb for people to trash them just because they are easier or simple. Its make them seem snooty and pretentious And based on how you said, vast knowledge and experience, you sound pretty snobbish Games are just meant for people to have fun with them. So why trash a game because it simple or easy. As long as its fun (or the users are having fun with it), its succeeding at its intended purpose Also, just because people like the simple games doesnt mean they dont play others. People can branch out, but still enjoy the basics

The 10 games on that list pretty much scream "I hate popular games".

I mean sure, some have been around since before our grandparents where born (some for way longer). Some of them are really simple if you have the brain of a functioning middle-schooler. Some are completely random and involve no skill whatsoever.

Despite all of that, I could have fun with any of them with the right people and that is what's important. Anybody who complains about why board game X is popular and not game Y are probably the same people who get off trying to min-max their characters in D&D and get pissed when the Chaotic Neutral NPC wins a battle with them because they rolled a nat 20 on the "Kick them in the balls and run" check.
