I wouldn't call BB grounded in reality TBH, it's always been black comedy, I guess what people call "Hyper Reality."

I mean would you say Black Mirror is grounded in reality? The show hinges of a suspension of disbelief for drama

https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/vince-gilligan-interview-breaking-bad-10-years-on/

article contains massive spoilers for the entire show but a specific quote

But my point is, we felt a need to hit a lot of the stuff head on and make it as realistic as possible and, more importantly than that, always have it yield consequences. Understandable, believable and very often negative consequences. Because to do otherwise felt unearned and it felt reckless.
Better to make the world seem more realistic in the consequences of these bad choices Walter White makes throughout the run of the series.

It was always meant to be realistic. The problem was it felt more like an episode of gotham at times

The four that always stuck out with me were...

Tuco claims to be the only Meth dealer in Albuquerque, but Gus exists.

The DEA not finding Walt and Jesse's IDs either on Tuco's person or in his house after the raid that kills Tuco.

The "SuperLab" is supposedly shielded from phone service, but Tyrus calls Gus from the lab.

Mike supposedly did an extensive background check on Walter, but never brings up that fact that his Brother In Law is in the DEA.

What always bothered me was that
they introduced Gus out of nowhere, who somehow is a one man operation powerful enough to keep the top cartel out of new mexico. Who decides Walt, a man who's most likely dying, who's partner is unreliable and who is extremely new to the business, would make a good partner

That was definitely the moment the show really just fell apart for me and it was clear I was watching another fantasy show not grounded in reality

You can make exceptions for everyone I think but Gus, Mike and Hank.
All of them were either inexperienced in general or else just comfortable at a lower level. Jessie is an example. He literally has no idea how to handle being more than a street level dealer

I forgave the episode of Tuco getting his office blown up and the shootout as Walt really is just suicidal and people are caught off guard by it

But Gus really just was one of the worst written characters I've come across.
He's this mastermind who single handly keeps the most dangerous cartel out of New Mexico and then decides an amateur is a great partner

He's there as soon as Walt is actually working in the lab. Gus' offer for Walt to work full time (as opposed to the 1 time exchange in s2) comes without Jesse being involved

That partner makes Gus an absolute fortune and is about to die so will leave 0 loose ends

Of all the things in the show that's really not much of a reach. Especially compared to the stuff other people have mentioned, the blowing up Tucos office, plane crash, fugue state, etc.

Yeah but Jesse is incidental to the test. Gus is clear that he wants nothing to do with him. The drop is structured so that the only question is if Walt can deliver good product on demand, and then when Gus decides to actually employ Walt there's no involvement of Jesse.

Season 1 is one of the best seasons of Better Call Saul. The more cartel stuff that gets introduced, the less focused BCS gets.

It is but just one season of BCS does not top the entirety of BB even tho I never liked BB that much anyways, but the ebst of BCS comes deep into the series as we more udnerstand the main characters and their motivations which just one season is not going to do (much of) I do agree that it was less focused with the cartel stuff but my favorite scenes were never along with the cartel stuff (with some exceptions) it was the culmination of multiple threads that were stewing along seasons, like Jimmy scamming Chuck's insurance company or the guilt finally catching up to Kim at the bus for about 5 minutes and a soft elderly woman touch at the last second of it.

TBH season 1 of BB and BCS were my favorites <_<

I feel like both shows lost a little something in stakes once the crime drama got amped up. Saul and Walt really felt like they had a lot more to lose or gain in Season 1

Then as the show went on they were physically in danger but other than that the drama just seemed less personal

BrBa is very good, but starts losing the plot when Gus is introduced. It never gets bad, but season 5 is totally skippable.

BCS is better overall, although the Jimmy plots are ten times better than the cartel stuff.

Better shows are Sopranos, first five seasons of X-Files, Adventure Time, The Wire. Probably others.

Season 3 finale was insane, then the whole final season with the commercial and everything Jimmy did to psyche Howard and whatever the fuck was still insane petty shit, those were huuuuuuuge stakes that was pretty much the heart of the show tbh. But sure there was also actual physical threat of violence too.

It just fell into the same trap that similar shows like Weeds, Ozark did. It started simple, and the story was simple. Mainly because they didn't know if it would hit.

But as the shows gained more and more success, they constantly had to top the season before, so the storylines and situations had to get bigger and more involved.

Like, a guy making meth in and RV for some small time sales is an easy story to tell, as is a widow becoming the local weed dealer, or a small time 3rd in line money launderer having to take control of the operation.

But then you have to make the story bigger and grandiose. And you end up with them all basically taking over entire Cartels.
