She didnt sign up for dating someone undergoing intense cancer treatments, who will probably die. I dont think society should look down on her for wanting out. But using mental health as the excuse is weak as fuck. Just say you dont want to date someone with cancer, or better yet dont say anything at all publicly. Self-inflicted wound.

as far as why she said she's running the marathon, I dunno if it was stated anywhere, but maybe someone asked her why she's running/who she's running for, and that's how it came out.

My hs gf waited a month or two before leaving me when I got released from the hospital

The really scummy part is she thinks this is worthy of being interviewed over. If it were me I wouldn't want to bring attention to how I abandoned someone I love in their darkest hour.

I disagree that mental health is a weak excuse, watching someone you love die of a terrible disease could be very taxing on a person's mental health and while i do agree it can be selfish what good does it do him if he's going to through this watching her deteriorate. Its a complex situation due to humanities general need to be social creatures.

And this is why society sucks.

Say what you will, but atleast people stuck together before. Now at the slightest (or most drastic) sign of adversity they dip & expect people to sooth them for their mental health

People have always done this. My uncle's girlfriend left him when he had brain cancer probably about 40 years ago now. He didn't survive, though.

She's weak. Not saying I'd be stronger in the same situation, but oh well.

They stuck together because women were property for most of human history and no fault divorce where women could initiate is an extremely recent invention lol

If I was in that situation I couldn't leave my wife like that. Shit like that can cause people to sink into depression, or deeper because now they feel alone so they're suffering even more.

People lose hope that way.

Contrary to popular opinion, you're not actually obligated to stay with somebody who's going through an extremely challenging battle with a debilitating illness. She may get a lot of flack, but it's not 'selfish' to escape a physically, mentally, and emotionally draining situation.

People who stick through those tough times because of true love are admirable, but people who can't handle the difficulties and choose to leave aren't evil for doing so.

iirc, they were actually engaged, and she said she loved him but broke up with him soon after they found out about the cancer.

edit: nvm i remembered incorrectly, found the article. They weren't engaged, but she says she loves him.

Something similar actually happened to my brother's friend. He had a brain tumor and ihe got got taken out. But it affected his speech. It took a while for him to recover. He needed help obviously. But his wife at the time couldn't take it and left him. He is now married to another woman who used to have cancer as well and they have a kid.

This generation is fucked I swear. You wouldn't see this with our parents generation.

It's true that you aren't obligated. But what if it was your spouse?

My mom and I was there for my dad when he got brain cancer and to the very end at least.. It's not easy by any means.

Might just be a generational thing as well. Our generation are not as mentally strong and won't work through as many hardships as our parents.
