Tifa is still my favorite to actually control and play as. All the characters are actually very good once you learn them.
Aerith was getting a lot of flak early on from some people, but I found in Hard mode and the toughest VR challenges, she is probably my MVP. She is the most dependent on materia and equipment, so is better in the late/post game. 2 of the most broken strats involve her as well (ATB spam with Yuffie and 'infinite' limit breaks).
