I don't understand. Just make a movie where she's black. It's fine. It would be no more wrong than Elizabeth Taylor playing her.

But this is not true so why pretend it's a documentary?

The trailer has clips of "experts" making up some conspiracy nonsense that there's a chance she was a native egyptian and a couple of people talking about how she was definitely black.

Part of the reason I wanted to be a girl was seeing Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra and feeling like beauty was something I wanted for myself.

The truth is, Cleopatra's true looks has been lost to history.

I know people tend to bicker on this, but Cleopatra is often thought of being average beauty for her time.

Like Jesus, her appearance have been fictionalized to the point where no one is really sure about what they looked like.

okay I watched the trailer

this seems like one of those documentaries where a lot of liberties are taken (which is a lot of documentaries of ancient civilizations because we only can know so much) but will be made a huge deal by the media because its about black people

and nobody said she was definitely black, there was one guy who said he imagines her having curly hair and skin color similar to his and then the old lady who said what her grandma told her

but yeah, a lot of people are going to blow this out of proportion real quick

If we could ever find her, it would be a huge event. Supposedly her grave was kept secret even to people alive at the time. Only a handful of people knew where she was. And presumably they then took that secret to their own graves

Maybe...

Not maybe. She was historically documented to be Greek.

It's valid to argue over whether early Egyptians were black or some other ethnicity (because there's a fair amount of evidence both for and against, and it's not helped by most legit historians deliberately avoiding the issue out of fear of political incorrectness), but we know pretty definitively that the Ptolemaic Dynasty was fairly pure-blood Greek.

Crimsoness posted...

Almost certainly not. From what we know of the Ptolemies they were hugely against mixing their blood with the "commoners". It's one of the reasons why they were basically known for a lot of brother-sister marriages.

The assumption has always been that most members of the Ptolemaic line were about as Greek as it gets. Which is why the occasionally had difficulty relating to their subjects.

The Ptolemys followed Egyptian tradition and "kept it in the family."

Well in general because it (her ethnicity more so than her skin colour specifically) relates to the foundation of the Hellenistic period of of the mediterranean world, which is one of the most important periods of European and near-eastern history from a historical perspective.

Specifically, it isn't important. But that doesn't mean you should lie about it and claim you're making a documentary when it's just a conspiracy theory.

This is my assumption based on how they're portraying their work in their own promotional material.

Isn't there a well known bust that was actually produced in her lifetime? Between it and the surviving coinage which is somewhat consistent with her portrayal in said bust (yet comes from different places in the Roman empire), I'm of the opinion that she was mostly Greek. I'm skeptical that she was of entirely Greek ancestry (it was not uncommon for rulers of foreign extraction to hook up with the native nobility, as it was politically advantageous to do so in many respects) but the few remaining 1st century BC portraits of her lead to me to believe that she had some fairly pronounced European features (particularly her nose, which is easily the most prominent feature in all such images).

The truth is, nobody knows for sure and short of finding her remains and doing years and years of testing on them, we never will.

Heard about Netflix Cleopatra yesterday. Thought it was some generic drama and it was just people complaining about the skin color of an actor when it didn't matter at all.

Didn't know it was some documentary where they literally have people spouting pseudo-history about Cleopatera being black when all the actual evidence points to her being Greek.
