Do you like da rule change?

Apparently dey made a rule where da baseball pitcher gets like 20 seconds to throw da ball, which has made da game around 30 minutes SHORTER

Da fuck???? Why da fuck were dey taking minutes to throw a daum ball lmao

As someone who was pretty indifferent to watching baseball but did feel like it stalled a little too much, absolutely yes this is a good change.

Its insane to me that they didnt have any kind of rule like that until now.

Like im pretty sure the shot clock became a thing in NBA in the 60s

Basketball got the shot clock because of teams deliberately running the clock out to hold on to a lead. There's rarely any advantage to be gained from dragging out a baseball game, it's still 9 innings regardless.

I heard there was some incident where a batter got punished for not running before time ran out, but it was the pitcher's fault. But they punished the innocent batter. Pitcher waited til almost the end of the clock. Then there was not enough time to run before batter got given a punishment. Sent to the bench or something

I still don't watch much due to being heavily invested in two other sports, but their decision likely saved baseball. There's something like 70% of baseball fans are over 45 years old according to a study I'm too lazy to look up right now. The games were too long, now they are shorter, and there are more hits and stolen bases because they got rid of the shift.

Pretty much every single rule change MLB has done the past few years has been great IMO. The whole "extra innings start with a runner on second" rule is the only one that I would say could use some tweaking (like not starting until the 12th inning instead of right at the 10th) but even that rule is still far better than not having the rule at all. The pitch clock, the ban on infield shifts, the DH in both leagues, all excellent.

I like it because the games are a far more reasonable length. Watching a baseball game used to pretty much consume your whole evening. It feels like the rules make it shorter than just 30 less minutes.

Yeah i'm indifferent, always enjoyed baseball as it was, it's fine sped up a bit, but if the change didn't happen I'd be fine with it also.

I dont know what shifts are but I'm guessing it's where they move in fielders around a ton to prevent any scoring?

The pitch clock makes sense, and saving about 30 minutes a game is pretty huge.

It's basically loading up the infield on one side to prevent "pull hitters" (AKA hitters who hit the ball a certain way a lot) from getting hits. Balls that would be singles through a "normal" infield would instead be caught for an easy groundout. Examples of these shifts from before the rule change:

The new rule change essentially bans these infield shifts by requiring all four infielders to stay on their side of the infield (1B and 2B on the right side of second base, 3B and SS on the left side) and requiring all infielders to line up on the infield dirt and not in the outfield grass.

Gotcha, this visual is really helpful since it is alsp labeled.

Yeah, that seems like a reasonable change.

I honestly didn't care if they went with the DH in both leagues or the DH in neither league. Having the DH only in the AL like it was before was literally a competitive advantage for AL teams because NL pitchers were more likely to get injured due to also having to bat and run the bases. As long as it was the same in both leagues, either way was fine.

It's pretty funny watching teams with trash bullpens (e.g: phillies) absolutely struggle with the rule. But overall, it is an improvement.
