Does society expect that boys don't cry?

What are your thoughts? Are boys not supposed to cry?

Yes. But it's bs

Everyone cries. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

My father cried when he had to carry his father's ashes to his grave. Like his brother at his side.
My boyfriend cried with me when we had to put our cat down.

I'm always reading All this alpha or sigma male bs and it just paints a picture of men that is unrealistic and toxic af.

But that's my opinion

That's cool. Women usually do appreciate this in men, I've found.

there is a difference between a death, a forever goodbye, or a tragedy that will end in economic ruin and well. Crying over anything else

Voted no. 20 years ago i wouldve voted yes.

Much more open and forgiving society than it used to be, though there's still a lot of ugly societal outdated 'norms' that some people still hold onto.

lots of other things hurt too

men need to learn to be vulnerable with each other

usually the act of doing so is much feared but as soon as it's done, provided it's with a good friend, there's reciprocation and the friendship matures meaningfully

most of what we're told is desired from women is actually just that men not bottle their shit up and then explode

which means saying "i don't like that" when she behaves poorly and being willing to leave when she is clear that she won't change

which runs against a lot of other things we teach to men unfortunately

And even people who say you need to open up hate when men open up. Like think of the insults that even progressive minded people throw out at men. With out even thinking about the implications .

this is pretty much what those 100s of Reddit posts said - cry with a friend, youll get support. Just never cry in front of a girlfriend/wife

This song single handedly changed my perspective on men crying when I was a teen. I was surrounded by "overly" masculine men. But I was always more willong to explore my feelings. Brag, but I was responsible for opening some my friends to conversations about anxieties. It feels good to do that and have that ability. I was always good at talking about deep topics without getting emotional. Though I have my soft spots like everyone else that will choke me up and shut me down.

When I was kid she kept trying to get me to cry when she thought I was sad. I think she thought I was refusing to because I was a boy, but I just didn't cry.

That seems to be the case with most online ignorance. It's very easy to let people like that shape your entire world view. You rarely ever run into people who aren't nuanced when you're offline tho. Even if on the surface they say something that sounds extreme. A couple thought out follow up questions can really flesh out your understanding of their understanding. But, if you follow up with judgemental accusations, you might likely get the person to dig their feet in rather than elaborate on their first comment.

Sometimes the way you act towards people ends up influencing the ignorance of the rest of the conversation just as much as their first comment you got sparked from did.

Show tolerance towards the intolerant and you'll be surprised with the results sometimes. Might walk away with a more optimistic view than if you build the rest of your view of them off assumptions and generalizations from what you read online.
