What did we learn? We learned that Americans are so entitled and privileged that they don't truly understand what it means to actually lose freedom. Idiot Americans actually think being told to wear masks for a period of time to help contain the spread of a sickness is a legit loss of freedom. They legitimately thought they were having their freedom taken from them. I mean.......how flucking entitled does a society need to be to completely lose sight of what freedom actually is and think what we had to go through as a society can actually be misconstrued as having your freedoms taken from you?

That is what we learned. We learned how privileged, entitled and spoiled American society is. On top of how dumb and ignorant it already was.

Pretty much sums it up nicely. When the pandemic hit, I had already been working grocery retail for about 13 - 14 years so my faith in humanity was already beyond low and then seeing how people couldnt handle staying in or wearing a mask or anything pretty much completely killed it.

Absolutely disgusting and shameful.

Hard to say. There is no right answer. Covid-zero didn't work, let-er-rip didn't work... there is no true best outcome.
zero covid did work where it was implemented. the "true best outcome" would have involved keeping those policies in place and restricting travel until the virus was actually gone. it was implemented in a lot of places. and it worked. some of those places relaxed restrictions, and, of course, they stopped working. they are necessary.

Because the last time you made a topic about your past you were blatantly baiting people into flaming you because you were very much saying it was just one of them things like everyone goes through a stage of making up having cancer.

You never admitted what you did was wrong and you never apologised for it and were baiting people. Just like you are in this topic.

The virus doesnt just go away. Its like saying the flu will go away one day. Its just not going to happen. Covid is with us forever now. We are never going to get to the point no one will ever catch it again.

From my point of view the plan should have been restrict the spread of covid as much as possible until the point a vaccine was released and then at that point slowly allow people to start going about their life as usual. The key for me is to not overwhelm the hospitals.

At the same time vulnerable people should be more protected. Care homes and the like should be a lot more locked down until everyone has had the vaccine.

The idea you can lock down for a period of time and then open up and no one will get it is crazy talk. Not that Im suggesting we should let it rip. Social distancing has to form one of the most basic ways of dealing with the virus but its only one part of a larger plan and certainly there is to be a plan to reopen as well and accept when we do people are gonna catch it. But by that point we have the vaccine and those not vulnerable have already had it so the chances of catching it decrease.

then the solution is to keep the protective measures in place indefinitely. it's not hard. such measures were implemented in a lot of places, and they worked while they were in place.

What restrictions specifically would you like to see remain in place indefinitely and to whom would they apply?

mandatory masking in indoor public spaces, frequent mandatory testing, mandatory up-to-date vaccination. exposure tracking (for example, for a while around here we had to give a restaurant our phone number before going in; and we would be notified if there was an exposure at the venue), mandatory air quality standards for indoor public spaces.

restrictions on travel (for example, having to self-isolate for a few days after getting off a plane). frequent briefings from relevant officials regarding cases, hospitalizations, deaths, etc. the ability to have lockdowns if case numbers get too high.

that's mostly off the top of my head. I might have missed some stuff. but I see no reason why these restrictions shouldn't apply to everyone. there are some individuals who have immune system deficiencies; they can get medical exemptions for vaccines and whatnot.

Those restrictions all make sense during the early stages but Im not sure them being indefinite is suitable. At some point you do have to balance quality of life and the economic impact of any such restrictions.

Is there any situation in which you would you be happy to see those restrictions relaxed? Or when you say indefinitely do you literally mean forever?

Because as I said covid is never going away now. Its with us forever. Much like colds and flus. Would you also like said restrictions to be in place for the flu as well and if not why not and probably more importantly whats the difference in your opinion?

I really don't know. what I do know is that letting the virus run amok also has significant effects on "quality of life" and on the economy; and that this basically never gets acknowledged by the people who want to just let the virus rip through everything. I also know that most countries dropped their protective measures far too early.

at some point I could maybe see it as reasonable to relax testing, travel restrictions, and informational briefings. but the ability to re-implement those measures should absolutely remain in place.

Oh yeah I agree completely. Just letting it run wild is a stupid idea. Least of all because if hospitals get overrun then people with non covid conditions tend to suffer because resources are spread too thin and there arent any beds free.

In the UK specifically there was a lot of media talking about how cancer sufferers werent getting the treatment they needed because resources were too busy with covid cases. Many people died because the cancer was either found too late or they just werent getting the care they needed.

Another fuck up was how care homes were massively fucked over because they were sending old people with known covid back into them to free up hospital spaces and lo and behold it ran like wide fire in the care homes taking out many many more people than needed. Of all the decisions made in the UK that had to be up there with the worst.
