He also played a fat guy, when they could have gotten a fat guy. But with all the shit BF had dealt with I am not *going give him heat for it.

Five previous straight actors have won Best Acting Oscars for playing gay roles. William Hurt won for Kiss of the Spider Woman in 1985, Tom Hanks for Philadelphia in 1993, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote in 2005, Sean Penn for Milk in 2008, and Rami Malek won for Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018. Fourteen other straight and cis actors have been nominated for gay and trans roles in the category. Three more cis and straight actors have won Oscars in the Best Supporting Actor category as well.

The character is like 600 pounds. Do you not see the issue around finding, let alone working around, an actual 600 pound actor?

? People are whining about them not casting an actual fat guy. Then they get hit with, if they hired someone of that size, he would probably die on set.

This year, Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh also won acting Oscars for playing queer roles in the movie Everything, Everywhere All At Once.

That was just one of their variants though, right? The ones from the main universe were straight. Or at least Michelle's was, I guess we didn't know enough about Jamie's character.

I think the usual implication is that straight actors winning awards for playing gay characters is somehow taking those opportunities away from gay actors, but if it's only 6 Oscars since 1985 I'm not sure that argument holds much weight

i really hate this clickbait internet era with such a passion for real.

some random person on social media will complain about the stupidest mundane shit and then, some journalist (if we can call that) from some online publication looks at it and makes an article about it making it seem like a bigger deal than it is...

For fuck's sake, it is acting. Not everything is comparable to blackface. Not everything is robbing someone of their identity. Homosexuals play heterosexuals. Atheists play Christians. Brits play Americans.

It's ACTING.

Sorry, but as a gay dude, I have no problem with it and he might be bi or questioning anyway. I forgot his name because I did not watch the series he was playing in, but a young 18 years old man was accusing for "queer baiting" because he was "straight" and social media pressured him to come out as bi. Just don't prevent gay people from playing gay people

As a gay man, I'm fine with Fraser playing one in an award-winning film for 3 reasons:
  • when the performance is done well (by sane standards), I don't give a flying fuck about the orientation of the actor...most of us don't
  • his infamous crucifixion by the biased divorce system garners my sympathy for him as a fellow western man
  • strictly limiting notable actors being allowed to play gay roles inadvertently leads to less representation of gay culture in hit films.
In the west, I'm really not hung up on the orientation of the actor doing the role. I'm fine with it when the chosen actor can do the part justice without making gay folk look like stereotypical abominations like certain other nations still casually do.
