There has to be some disincentive to just deserting.

i mean, it makes sense from a military standpoint. imagine playing an RTS and your squads kept slowly dwindling in size because your soldiers just dgaf and there were no repercussions. that game wouldn't be very easy to win.

i'd consider someone deserting as possibly a sign that they grew out of being stupid and violent, like maybe they don't fantasize about shooting people any more.

In America at least, the government has committed tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars training you. Every soldier is a decent investment of defense funds. They want to get their money's worth out of you, whether you die, get out at the end of your contract, or do 20+ years.

If you've become so disillusioned with the military that you can no longer justify participating in it, there are a variety of ways to get out that do not involve going AWOL or deserting. Going AWOL is the second most cowardly way out of the military.

Additionally, you swore an oath to your country. Abandoning it via going AWOL or desertion is walking back on that oath. Borderline treason. Oathbreaker, among the highest of dishonorable actions.

If you were forcibly conscripted and held at gun point then I could be a little more forgiving, but in the context of the country and Army I have sworn my life to, I have no pity.

This too. If you've a security clearance and you go AWOL you could tell/sell damaging secrets to your countries enemies.

I would personally sooner rather die than abandon my country.

Eh, if there's not a draft or anything there should definitely be consequences. People deserting can directly lead to other people getting killed.

Well, this is basically a feature in Dynasty Warriors. The worse your side is doing, the less reinforcements you get, making the battle harder. I believe officers will even leave in some battles, if your morale gets low enough.

If you think people deserting in the military is okay, how about firefighters? Is it okay if they roll up to a bad fire, and just go "Nah man that thing is on fire, I'm out"? Or how about police officers not wanting to go into a building because there's a shooter in there?

Shut the fuck up. That is the most moronic thing I've ever heard.

Because
1.) It's a act of becoming a traitor. You have military knowledge that may be useful to the opposing faction.

2.) It's a major safety issue. Running away from battle may put your life and other people's lives in danger. Or if you are alive, the enemy can capture you and they will do whatever they can to make you fork over any military knowledge or weaponry or ultimately force you to join their cause. Hence betray the army and your fellow comrades

I wish one day humans would evolve to a point where

1st- Two leaders call for war and both armies say No fuck that shit NO

2nd- The two leaders go head up 1-on-1 to settle their bs by themselves.

people desert stateside too outside of any battle zone. a few have deserted the base i used to live at in south carolina. i can't blame them tho. shit can still be stressful. i've known one or two people at my unit that got out early for mental health reasons not helped by people basically just shitting on them for not being the optimum worker.

i don't really care about it but if that were to have happened in my flight that'd just mean one less body to help us maintain aircraft which would make the workplace just slightly shittier since we were low-manned and pretty inefficient as it was lol. people would get upset if someone were to take some time off to take college classes or some other thing that may be important. it was work work work mentality 24/7. i hate that shit

higher-ups prob have their own reasons for being angry idk. i assume all of them are sociopathic so can't really understand their mindset.

it was a 16 year old kid who got into the military under special circumstances, with his friends, but then eventually got scared and they let him leave because he's just a kid
