#5 - Eve Manners

The entire campaign may just hinge on one single session, one single story as told by one single woman. Eve Manners, who gave the last bits of her life to tell the party the story of Area 50. I... don't know if I can do Eve justice in a write-up. I've been turning over in my head how to tell her story. She meant such a great deal to me, so much more than I could explain in simple words. Here was a woman whose only crime was to love the wrong person in the eyes of a fearful, culturally stunted society. She was captured, dragged away by anti-communist goons and forced into a firing line. Eve Manners was killed - and that was where the torture truly began. Brought back to life just to see if it was possible, Eve would spend the next chapter of her existence in a 58 year-long half-life.

After the party cracked open Area 51, there came a message through back channels, Morse code, that lured them back to the scene of science's greatest crime. There, they learned of Eve Manners' tragic life. Of a woman whose comfort she relied upon for strength - a woman who was then killed, her brain scooped out of her skull and strung up inside of a house that began to lumber into animation thanks to her sentience. A house that so desperately wished to remember her past life, the happy memories, the music - yet because of prodding, trauma inflicted by Dowling's men, she could not sing.

Eve spoke of Randall Dowling, a man from another Earth, who began to incubate the first stirrings of a disease called Morticoccus, which functioned much like the Anti-Life Equation. This Randall Dowling, under orders from Tex Thompson, seemed to lay the groundwork for so many projects that have since found their way to Darkseid's hands. Randall Dowling - who also is from Jenny Sparks' world.

Eve spoke of the first Hunger Dogs. Of a Robotman who silently watched over these projects before their end - a Robotman which now lays in pieces within Z'onn Z'orr's robotics laboratory. So many threads, spun together by Eve as she walked the party through the ruins, like a ghost through her old haunts. And in the end, Eve Manners bid them farewell. For 58 years were over. The half-life was complete. Eve's last act was one of a hero - and the inspiration for a new act in this campaign. Without Eve Manners, I think the emotional impact of what Darkseid's deeds have wrought wouldn't be so visceral, so deeply meaningful. Eve Manners led a life entire comprised of loss and grief, love stolen and pain endured. Yet she persevered until the last possible moment she could to provide just one iota of meaning to her existence. Sometimes, that's all we can hope for. Sometimes, that's all we have in us. Sometimes, the greatest heroes leave just a single, almost invisible mark, to carry the torch, to let out that last gasp, that final cry. It's up to the rest of us to hear it, to know it, to never let its call be denied.

Guessing Canary

One of Waller's arguments she uses to justify to herself that she treated Roz'etta right back when they first met is that others would have put her through so much more pain.

Roz'etta's seen bits and pieces of what those others would have done, but Eve was a forceful example of what could have been.

Eve hit everyone. She was very good.

I want to say it originally was scheduled on a week where everyone would have been able to make it and then things got rescheduled? Not too sure

You guys met the house that couldn't sing before Eve correct?

Yeah, the house that cannot sing was in the Area 51 session.

We helped her to sing! And she fought off an eldritch horror or some other to help us.

Upon returning for the one-shot, the house was in pieces, and we met Eve at the gate.

That was a good writeup for Eve.

It felt rewarding to have helped the house in session. Letting Eve know that we helped her to sing so many week later was bittersweet as it felt heart warming, but in the way of lifting a friend's spirits knowing they're dreading leaving home.

Functionally, Gal is an original character. Her art is largely irrelevant to the comic in which it appears, and there isn't actually a Vuldarian genderswap Guy Gardner lumbering around the universe somewhere. That's probably a crying shame; Gal has been my favorite comedic relief as of late, but all of her loudmouthed insults and leering pick-up lines really do a disservice to the character. What lies beneath, somewhere deep within Gal, is a person capable of great compassion and change. Though her resting gear is obnoxious, obstreperous, a true incorrigible cad, and despite the fact that she spends most of her time either staring at her exposed breasts (which she can't get enough of) or turning her arms into alien techno-organic weapons in red, Gal also has a softer side. For me, this was never better exemplified then when Guy Gardner (who treats her like a younger sister) was bowled over by news that his dearly beloved deceased boo, Ice, was actually still alive and while. This flummoxed Guy something fierce - and immediately, Gal was on her knees, holding up Guy's head, wrapping him in a cradling hug. She empathized immensely, and for a long, silent second, there was something deeply moving to me about that sort of clone-turned-counsel moment.

Originally rescued from the Auctioneer's menagerie-ship, Gal was one of three Gardner-clone products the party discovered within, but she's the only one that's lingered with any real effect. To the party, Gal is an aberration not just because she's a clone of one of their closest allies on Oa, but also because she's a clone of Guy from a time in his life he's largely moved past. Guy is far less fiery than those days, still rough around the edges but having matured greatly. Gal will seek out Rosetta, hoping to giggle like a schoolgirl with her about hot women with tight asses and tighter costumes. She doesn't know how to keep her hands to herself. And when she witnesses Data 7 sharing an intimate moment with Lantern Morro, she couldn't stop laughing about how it was gay... until she realized she was gay, also. Which sent her into a fit of laughter again. She's certainly not homophobic; she's just the most immature person imaginable. Apparently she goes to the dining hall on Oa just to watch a cute blonde eat her dinner.

I love extremely imperfect characters with the capacity to change, and that's Gal in a nutshell. Her future may not be the Guy Gardner who topped our last 52 list, but she has the potential to reach that point. We know one path this younger, more feminine Guy Gardner could take, but whether she does, that's another story entirely. But it's a story I can't wait to explore. Gal Gardner is maybe my favorite Oan non-Lantern right now, after all.

I love Zoe.

Rescued from the harrowing underground experimental laboratories of the Cinque, the story of Zoe immediately became complicated. Her father had moved heaven and Earth in order to ensure her safety, but Zoe and Deadshot immediately fell back into a complicated territory. At the time, Floyd was reeling fresh from his admittance to Catman of a crime most foul. It became apparent to Floyd he was ill-equipped to provide Zoe what she needed - a father that wasn't a piece of shit; thus, he foisted his daughter onto Spirit, a boy who he knew to be honorable enough not to try anything with his daughter, despite clearly wanting to (in Floyd's eyes).

Zoe was oblivious to what her father was going through, and she struggled at first to understand her place in Z'onn Z'orr, and not with her dad. But soon enough, she would be provided the truth - Catman himself, in an attempt to take away Deadshot's family in the way Deadshot had taken Catman's - revealed just how monstrous her father was to Zoe. This drove Zoe further away from her dad, and she chose to express her hatred for him by stealing his weapons - those trademarked wrist-shooters; and likely, that alone would earn a place on this list. However, the story did not end. On Spirit's first day off since he was awakened into the world of Darkseid, Zoe joined him on a trip to Hawaii. While visiting the mall, the pair were confronted by a psychopath, a massive, brutish axe-wielding villain called Citizen. After being chased into the Food Court, and witnessing Spirit in a deep, piptched conflict and fighting for his life, Zoe revealed that she had kept one of Deadshot's stolen wrist-shooters in her bag. She blew Citizen's brains out right in front of Spirit, then promptly vomited.

In Spirit's best scene of the campaign, the pair sat down on the beach afterwards, and he helped walk Zoe through the guilt, the pain, the shame - and Zoe revealed she didn't feel those things, which somehow made her feel them all the more. The killing didn't hurt; it was knowing that the killing didn't hurt that hurt. Since then, Zoe has been struggling with knowing that a part of her father's murderous tendency resided deep within her. But Zoe has decided not to hide from it - she instead wants to use it to make up for everything her father has. Zoe, most recently, even asked Spirit to let her go to Lamumba, so that a Lawton could make up to Hector for the sins of her father.

Sins of the Father. It's a recurring theme in this campaign, but no better exemplified in the story of Zoe Lawton. As her story continues, this young girl, only Spirit's age, is undergoing a harrowing rite of passage towards adulthoold. She's far too young and certainly not equipped to deal with the terrible, life-shattering consequences; but equipped with a deep, unshakeable friendship with Spirit, Zoe may just manage to come out of the other side of this journey without falling apart along the way.

For me, Zoe's story is perhaps the most rewarding one to tell over the long-term in this campaign. So many ideas are constantly percolating in my head for new Zoe scenes, little RP moments that I think will be intensely enjoyable. And as we rocket past the act closure of Eve Manners, I can only imagine where the Zoe story will go. It's probably one of my favorites, if not the favorite one going right now.

Zoe is probably my favorite character in this campaign, and I love every moment of her and Spirit. I actually got the aforementioned beach scene commissioned, though now that I think about it I'm pretty sure I showed it off in another topic lol.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how things go for her in Lamumba when we return there.

Stinky second

I love Zoe. She has skyrocketed up my personal rankings since her introduction. And Ive said it before, Scar, but Im the first campaign, I think you were a little less comfortable writing the child characters, so Zoe kinda became an extension of Deadshot. But now, most of the kids feel fully fleshed out and unique in their own right, dealing with the end of the world as best they can. Zoe is great in that regard, and I kinda want her to become friends with Courtney.

Also, really hoping its Artemis-2, if only because itd be so cool to be 100% right with my first pick of the draft.

Zoe was my pick after the fact for #1 of this list. I just think she's been through so much, has done so much since introduction, and has developed and shows signs of developing that put her squarely into a top character status for me.

I enjoyed listening to Zoe and Spirit go to the beach so much that I had to RP with Zoe at some point. Even if Saoirse and her have little reason to chat, I just really wanted to develop some sort of rapport.

I'll say this - I think Zoe could pull the #1 spot overall by the end of the campaign. I have that much faith in her.

Zoe is another who's been on my list to RP with for ages now.

Hey! No, I'm #1 dog! I'm supposed to be #1 dog! I don't wanna be #2 dog again... I'm always #2. Artemis-2, it's in my name. Big Bro is first dog, he's older dog. Now I'm #2. It's not fair.

I don't know why everyone makes such a big deal about Big Bro. It's not like he's got a shiny badge like I do. I'm a Deputy Dog, first of my name, officer at Checkpoint Justice with my partner, Glitch! He's like my Patch, you know, except he's an alien, and he hops around bopping between places with his teleportation powers. I kept him in a glass for a little while - he couldn't escape from that! Eventually, after he got hungry and thirsty enough, he promised to be my friend. That's the best kind of friendship, because you know they won't leave you if you show them you can destroy them.

I have this bottle, and it lets me send all sorts of important messages to my Big Bro. We're really close, even though, in the beginning, I was really confused and attacked him. That wasn't my fault - I was cloned dog, and I was being manipulated by a big, naked dumb dumb named Brody. Now that Brody's dead, I'm my own dog! For a while I lived in the access shafts of Hardcore Station, but then Big Bro got me and he promised to be my Big Bro forever! And he forgive me for being a bad dog.

I'm not a bad dog anymore! In fact, I'm really helpful dog! When Big Bro came to visit me at Christmas, we teamed up to stop evil President Nixon from taking over Hardcore Station. I had a lot of fun - but Big Bro kept trying to upstage me, so I took all of his dice rolls. He could have my lower ones - they were just as good, really. Good enough for him. I wanted to be faster dog and stronger dog! Afterwards, Big Bro promised to come see me for the big drinking contest at Al's Diner. Al's fat and he kind of smells from working in the kitchen all day, but he doesn't smell as bad as Roz'etta.

I worry about Darkseid. What happens when Roz'etta confronts him on behalf of Lashina? Can he even survive the smell? He'll be all like, 'DARKSEID IS... smelling something terrible!' and Roz'etta will go cry because that's what Roz'etta does. Cry, cry, big cry. She's such a baby. That's why she smells. Big baby wears stinky diapeys.

Someday, when I've cleaned up all of Hardcore Station and protected them from those dumbdumbs with the wings who keep trying to invade, I'll go visit Big Bro on Oa, and I'll get to see Riev, and Saoirse, and Xander... all my old friends. I hope Riev is ready to go for a run because no one has woken him up at 5:00 in the morning for a good jog. And he's not missing a leg, only an arm - so he has no excuse!
