Nothing terrifying than a man or someone using religion for their own gains. Power corrupts and the temptation to use it for selfish reasons. The post apocalypse background, the scarcity of resources, and a man like david knowing how to use the words of the bible are a combination of scary things that we could imagine. Davids representation was to show how desperate people were to listen to holy scripture. It gives meaning to daily struggles and the hope that one day salvation would be the result of that communitys sacrifices in trying to survive. I get where rainwilson is saying but i feel there he is focused on the wrong thing. That davids actions are Not* very christian like and should serve as a warning to false prophets and how they exploit others for their own selfish reasons.it happend throughout our history, its represented in this post apocalptic fictional show, and it could be happening today. Remind christians or any religious followers of their faith and the strength it takes to live as one in todays world. I knew people were going to react this way and I'm still really disappointed. David was pretty explicitly shown as a caricature of an atheist or non religious person. He stated outright that he didn't believe before the apocalypse and didn't really indicate that he believed afterwards either. Everything he said and did pointed to the idea that he was a manipulative sociopath that never believed in anything other than his right to dominate others by any means necessary. It was something out of a Chick Tract. The whole point is that his innate villainy was warping any idea of legitimate belief or Christianity. He's not a Christian behaving badly, he's a non Christian hoarding power by taking advantage of the truly faithful. It's just that they're a safe and easy target for fanaticism. In Taoism they show connection as being inherently misleading so someone who is obsessed with anything is considered "lost." It's just a way to show obsession in a way that won't get you letters; even though orthodox Jews and Muslims are much more devout. Hell, teachers have a higher rate of sex offenders in the US but no one is willing to talk about it as openly as pastors because then you have the teachers union and other people complaining. ...
