the whole thing should be "anti-Christian bias in Hollywood", but there wasn't enough space.

anyway, looking at his other tweets, he seems cool and levelheaded, so this isn't a dig at him, but I saw an article recommended about this:

He does have a point, but maybe the Christians should do something about their most vocal members being massive pieces of shit which is what inspires their media portrayals.

The preacher in The Walking Dead was a coward but not an outright villain IIRC. I think he even tries to redeem himself? I didn't watch all of the show though.

But yeah evangelist leaders are an easy source for villainy.

Christianity is basically the only major religion you can in openly mock without real consequence, so it makes sense that's it basically the default for evil religious folks in media. Turn that preacher into an imam or rabbi and it's a very different situation.

I dont necessarily disagree that theres a bias against Christianity in show business. Seems pretty intuitive that that would often be the case. And maybe the trope of the morally corrupt preacher is a little played out.

but its not like theres never any positive representations of Christians or priests in film/television

On one hand he's not exactly wrong, but on the other hand "the clergyman is evil" is not a cliche that has appeared out of nowhere recently or anything either, or at all exclusive to Hollywood, so what he's saying doesn't make a whole lot of difference either.

Religion is just an easy thing to use for a bad guy leader. Like it requires very little set up for how the bad guy is in charge and why people follow them and how they can potentially be doing so without their congregation knowing.

It's also something people have a lot of understanding around. Politics and whatnot can have a lot more rules and laws that might need to be explained.

Yes. He has a weird quasi-religious opinion of cordyceps, but no actual Christian faith.

Preface, I'm a Christian.

Some people unfortunately make no distinction between "Christian" and "conservative," "bigot," "Trump supporter," etc. Even taking that association out of the equation, there are those who feel that the world should see things as they do. If science lessons won't make an atheist out of a person, perhaps ridicule or vilification will shame them into seeing the light. To say that there is a universal Hollywood agenda against Christianity is overreaching. Some studios will allow pro-Christian content in one movie or show and anti-Christian content in another. Some studios like to secularize as much as possible to reach a maximum audience without worrying about the divisiveness of religion. And others may earnestly have a producer or two with a stick up their butt when it comes to the subject of religion. Or Christianity in particular.

I couldn't say definitively that HBO has any sort of agenda against Christianity. But they have borrowed from multiple anti-Christian works (His Dark Materials, The Plot Against America), platformed antireligious individuals (Bill Maher), and haven't offered a counterargument or platform to the other side that I've seen. Though not promoted, they do have some religious films available for viewing in their HBO Max library.

I haven't actually seen HBO's Plot Against America, but I have read the book in college. There is one page in particular where the protagonist looks at the image of Christ on a church and blames him for the rise of antisemitism in Germany and America. It's meant to be from the innocent perspective of a young Jewish boy facing persecution after Nazi sympathizer Charles Lindbergh becomes President of the United States, but the author's disdain seemed evident to me. It also came out of left field considering that, for a political novel about Republicans electing a Nazi, the book absolutely bent over backwards to avoid vilifying Republicans as a party. I wouldn't be surprised if HBO kept the scene in question. I wouldn't be surprised if they left it out.

I certainly don't imagine the series works quite as hard to be evenhanded on the political front as the novel did.

I think you nailed it. It's just a very easy thing for world building without actually creating it from scratch.

That's usually meant to imply that religious people are gullible and that their swindlers are at least smart enough not to believe in it themselves. There Will Be Blood, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Assassin's Creed are examples of this.

I don't think there's any representation of Christianity in film or television. If it is, it's compartmentalized and hardly mainstream. Lack of "Christianity" representation isn't the issue though. I don't remember the last time a film portrayed the experience of faith correctly- most of the time it's a seculaized interpretation of faith and not faith from the perspective of the faithful.

Proselytizing religions are inherently harmful to people.

For they, by definition, dismiss a person's current beliefs as wrong and immoral. Then demand the person change their beliefs or be damned for their refusal.

And in most cases, ensure unequal treatment under law against those that do hold onto their original beliefs.

In some cases, that means state-sponsored torture and death.

Christianity has dictated western culture for hundreds of years, so of course any pushback or criticism is read as "we're being persecuted for our beliefs!"

Instead of it spoofing the absolute atrocities that people can and have been led to commit in the name of faith

You seem upset at someone. Dunno who, but I hope you find them.

However, please keep in mind that doing blanket generalizations never makes you logical nor on the moral high ground. Not all Christians are homophobic. And honestly, it always bugs me how much folks hate Christianity but will turn around and claim to support minorities, namely black people.

I wonder what religion a large portion of Americas black population follows

But continue being angry at Christians. I guess.
