I know it gets no play here at all but wow Kingdom is just such an incredible long form manga.

You'd think what amounts to a Dynasty Warriors manga would get long in the tooth after 756 chapters and no end in sight, but not in the sleightest. If anything, it not being a Shounen battle manga with any type of power system/creep has resulted in it having a longevity and freedom from bloat that nothing else really does. A battle lasting 25 chapters when it's an actual, like, BATTLE with tens of thousands of men and dozens of POV characters is a hell of a lot more acceptable to me nowadays than a battle lasting 25 chapters where 2 dudes are smacking eachother on a mountain while a bunch of other people watch.

I've been meaning to get to it someday.

Started watching Edomae Elf and am pleasantly surprised. It's not going to blow anyone's mind, but it's a nice comfy show that has some heart in it.

Also finished Tomo-chan is a Girl. This was fine I guess. It followed the trajectory of a lot of romcoms where I had a lot of fun with the first couple episodes but was a bit of sick of it by the end. Not caring much about the main couple probably hurt things a bit. Misuzu and Carol were great and easily the highlight of the show.

There were some cool parts of Wano but I think it was about 50 chapters too long at least. I won't pretend One Piece isn't in the forefront of my mind when I talk about me being unable to tolerate this kind of thing anymore.

Luffy versus Crocodile was like half a dozen chapters with other stuff also happening at the same time. And it was better.

For me, it's extremely okay. I've been pretty disappointed in this season's SoL offerings in general. Elda's a solid character, but the rest of the cast doesn't have much going for them, particularly Koito.

Was that NieR Automata anime any good?

Got recommended Fruits Basket by a Youtuber friend, so I gave the first ep of 2001 version a shot. I always put it off despite its reputation, because the premise is one of those, "If this is really fucking dumb, it's going to hurt." sort of things. It reminds me a bit of Chobits or Clannad. Despite the humor and silliness, it never seems to get in the way of some actual heartfelt stuff the characters are going through. It's not perfect by any means, but a show like this could have gone way wrong. If the remaining episodes keep the balance of drama and comedy it had in ep 1, this should be a good watch.

I've only seen the 2001 version, but my understanding is that the more recent version is considered to be much better. I also think it adapts the entire manga whereas the 2001 series doesn't.

Of course I still liked the 2001 anime quite a bit when I watched it so I don't exactly think you can go wrong either way.

My friend said the exact same thing, so I should be in good for two different runs of the material.

Given that Atelier was one of my favorite franchises for a decade before Ryza took off because of the thigh thing, I'm not sure how I feel. I'm probably just still miffed they stopped dubbing them around Firis and couldn't play Ryza on its own merits...lazy bastards.

On a happier note UshiromiyaEva, I was going to post this earlier but didn't since the SMFAS finals were up at the time, but I recently watched Steins;Gate. And loved it as expected! I remember you had Baccano and S;G as your top two favs so there we go, I knocked them each out over the past year.

Funny thing is my anime queue is kind of up in the air after I play the S;G 0 VN and then watch that series, I gotta sort all of these (and more but figure I'll tackle these first) into some kind of viewing order:

Shiki was one of the pickups after Roba's rankings topic (Sunday Without God the other), premise definitely intrigued me so am looking forward to checking that out. But in retrospect have to work through non-anime stuff after I do Steins;Gate 0 so probably not until later this summer, hmm.

I tried watching some more Fruits Basket (and the 2019 for a change). There's this unnatural, "Tohru says anything and everything out to the viewer every time she's on screen" inner monologue that gets on my nerves. It doesn't help that the cat dude is one of those insufferable douchebag characters that is unlikeable to a fault (so the show spends forever making itself justify why he changes and isn't a total dickbag).

So, I'm gonna look for something else. This seems like a show I probably would have liked as a teenager or pre-teen. It is definitely written and presented that way. I am not its target, so I'll just find something else.
