I remember at the time there was a lot of drama over Florida but I was relatively young at the time and with 9/11 not long after it fell off the radar.

Florida was called for Al Gore, until Bush found out and called his people in Florida and began, what was actually 'The steal'

A lot of it was based on 'hanging chads' which was a complete line of bullshit.
I watched/listened to that shit happen in real-time.
~We are still paying for that whole thing, to this day.

I will say though, Gore refused to ride on Clinton's coattails, which was a real fuck up on his part.

I'd say pretty fucking hard considering that election was quite literally the fork in the road for the country.

Gore screwed himself. Not only did he not win his own home state (Tennessee), but he also failed to win his predecessor's (Clinton) state (Arkansas). Had he won either of them, he would have gotten the required 270 electoral votes, and Florida wouldn't have been such a big deal.

There were screwy votes going on in Florida, so there was a recount underway. The recount was taking too long and the SCOTUS got involved, halted the count, and with the EC vote tallies at that time Bush became the winner.

Literally raised 'The Threat Level' right during elections.
"Can't change horses in midstream" was repeated often.

Republicans knew he was a fuck up, but didn't care and used the other term "We have to respect the office of the presidency" as a dodge. Funny how that line of thought did not care over in the Obama administration.

If they had recounted the entire state of Florida, Gore would have most likely won. The fact that they kept recounting Miami-Dade County was what caused SCOTUS to finally step in and say "Enough!" and gave the win to Bush.

Was the SCOTUS weighted towards either DEM or GOP at the time? I didn't realise the Supreme Court got involved.

I have to get to work. So I can't really pull up the names.
But I am pretty sure one of his campaign managers was put in place as part of the recount.

Some could correct me if I'm wrong, but at the time the perception was that the SC (with some members filled by Bush's father, Herbert Bush) was being biased towards the Republicans and there was generally a huge outrage over that. At the time DC wasn't as entrenched by Democrats as it is now so people thought it was more right that a Republican win, the literal son of a reputable president (foreign policywise).

The race came down to Florida. Whoever wins Florida wins the election. Originally the election was called for Gore based on him winning Florida. But he after a recount it was called for Bush after allegedly he actually had more votes in Florida.

To this day there is still debate on who actually truly won

Unsurprisingly, you leapt at the chance to zero in on the single presidential election since the 1980's in which a Republican candidate won the popular vote...while being irrelevant to the post you quoted, since that outcome would more than likely not have existed in the hypothetical scenario in which Gore won the presidency.

SCOTUS basically ruled since the various counties of Florida used different forms of ballots, that it was causing a risk of inequality in both candidates chances, so SCOTUS ruled recounted must end immediately. That handed Florida to Bush and the presidency as well.
