When the new Budokai Tenkaichi was announced a bunch of them went like "who cares FighterZ is the only good DBZ game and everyone who likes BT sucks!!!"

dunno. but they're not wrong to say 'who cares' about budokai tenkaichi 4.
it's going to be a gimped version of past budokai tenkaichis. you can expect:
  • worse gameplay
  • less content
  • tons of overpriced dlc
  • truckloads of super content
  • $70
  • 14 gokus

Because the players who enjoyed those old DBZ games suck at fighters and didn't know any better tbph

Bamco is just cashing in on 2000s DBZ nostalgia with a low effort "sequel".

In our the year 2023 do you really believe they'll pack the game with characters? We'll be lucky to get 30 out of the box.

Those old dbz fighters do suck, especially from a fighting game perspective. They're laughably imbalanced, have an absurd amount of clone movesets, and the only thing to really differentiate characters from each other more often than not is their super animations. I don't love FighterZ, and it has its own issues, but the budokai and tenkaichi games would just be weird entirely forgotten kusoge if not for the dbz branding

For what it's worth though it's a two way street. I remember when FighterZ came out and we finally got a properly made fighter by a dev that makes well regarded games, people endlessly complained because the "roster was small", not realizing that having like a hundred characters, 75% of which will never actually be played by anyone, was the reason those old games were a mess. I was seeing people genuinely trying to suggest Xenoverse 2 was better as a fighting game because it had more people in it

Every scene has its elitists, but the fgc has been more and more welcoming by the year. Some of the concerns older players have discussed are valid, but they tend to be set in their ways and complain about changes while the newbies are helping grow the scene.

The smaller communities can go either way though.

I think they forget people don't like BT because of its merits as a fighting game, but because it's a DBZ simulator. It'd be like people who are into Starcraft saying that Starcraft is better than Stellaris because the latter is dumbed down or something.

Yeah, even Sakurai himself said in a video that brought up anime brawlers that the primary purpose of those games is to appeal to fans of the property first and foremost.
