A pause button sounds like something that wouldn't be a big deal if added. Doesn't affect difficulty or gameplay. Like yeah, the games have multiplayer, but it is entirely optional. You can play the games as purely single player games if you want. Basically the only reason to not add one is if there's no room in the control scheme for one.

Clearly I hate Rockstar's art (despite liking every game) and should stop endlessly complaining about "tap to sprint" being in every one of their open-world games. If I am going to play their games, I need to accept that they don't sprint like every other game. It's not a flaw if it's on purpose and hasn't changed in 20+ years.

I don't get the arguments against the pause button... it almost sounds like some people arguing against it would be against modern electronic devices having a sleep mode instead of it being turned on/off because "that's how things were".

Monster Hunter gets around this by having a similar menu to Dark Souls. Bringing up the menu in game doesn't pause, but if you hit LB (I think) it takes you to a page with pause at the bottom

The people complaining seem like they take gaming way too seriously and/or haven't played the game. It's incredibly easy to place yourself in a safe spot in the event of a situation.

If there is an actual emergency just put the controller down ffs, nothing in the game is affecting your real life so relax.

As someone who loves From games, please understand that not all of us perform these mental gymnastics to justify the lack of a pause button.

From is just okay at programming.

But that doesn't matter because to me, their games are perfection to me anyway.

It's not a poor design choice. Soulsborne games work just fine without a pause feature and it's been that way for over a decade. Just because you don't like that design choice doesn't mean it's a legitimate flaw.

By all means do keep crying about it though, lol. The way Soulsborne games live rent free in non-FromSoft fans heads is just hilarious, as demonstrated every time topics like this come up.

I want to read this topic but Im afraid of Elden Ring spoilers, it being my first From game.

I dont want them to add a pause option.

You don't realise it but these games have a pause button and an easy mode.

Pause: bonfire or quit to menu

Easy: new game

I love the games to death, and I still get embarrassed about how religiously defended every facet of these games are.

Ever since Dark Souls 1, we've had things like poorly translated/outright false item descriptions, bugs and glitches, broken features, all defended to the teeth. The games' online system is, frankly, piss poor when it comes to matchmaking specifically with your friends, yet to suggest so has historically been blasphemous. There was a vocal subsection vehemently defending the notoriously shitty PC port of DS1, attacking anyone who installed the mod that actually made it, yknow, playable. Fuck, a reviewer, who admitted they werent good enough and still gave the game a great score, once used a sekiro mod to make the game easier for the SOLE PURPOSE of being able to see/talk about some of the late game content, and invited some of the most hilarious and cringy "backlash" we've ever seen. Like this gem right here:

And calling out these ridiculous people is routinely met with "cry more," or some such.

Its ridiculous that From games are treated as some golden calf. It's straight up the only franchise I've ever seen where "its a design choice" is used to handwave ANY criticism; not only is it patently untrue that these ARE all design choices (sekiro plainly illustrates that they just can't be assed to figure out pausing with online, but would do it otherwise. Same with later releases of DS1 correcting shitty/false translations), but even if they were... a design choice can be bad. A design choice can be divisive. Some of the worst art we have ever seen was made very, very deliberately.

Blinx's pokemon comparison a few pages back is spot-on. No other franchise in the world would be given as much leeway as Fromsoft games.

Same people asking for a pause here are wondering why you cant pause in Destiny 2 either.

FROM already said they dont want to do it.

Their artistic vision is for you to struggle and feel a sense of accomplishment for winning.

Yeah some people can be toxic over the idea and elden ring is the best candidate for the idea.

but at what point do we throw away the artistic vision for money? Ubisoft makes all these games that cater to people who need their hands held in games because they are intimated by challenge and 9/10 of them are forgettable.

I dont like turn based RPGs but I wouldnt play one and complain the whole time about it being turned based. You go in knowing what to expect and if its not for you its not for you.

Yeah it seems weird people get aggravated that they won't add one and it's not hurting anyone at all. I don't even think it's doing much to hurt their sales right? Not enough to warrant a change that they don't want to make in the first place

Wanting a pause button should be obvious, tbqh.

It's actually easier to point to the games witthout a pause button. Really, it's only fully online games that get away with this and for them it makes perfect sense.

For offline Elden Ring, it's a little less justifiable.

And yet it is PERFECTLY possible to criticize art. We do it all the time, with literally every form of art. Something being made with a specific vision in mind doesn't exempt it from criticism, especially if the vision is flawed. Or if it was executed imperfectly.

There is no higher or greater reason for treating souls games with kid gloves; just the same overprotectiveness that gets fans of other series laughed out of the room.

Nope, no one is allowed to criticize any game they play. That's just entitled whining from babies who want every game to cater to their tastes. This is why no one will criticize a Ubisoft open-world game ever again. There are no mistakes or flaws in deliberate design.

Fanboys acting like asking for pause in all video games is like asking a RTS to add a first-person street racing mode.

It's actually hilarious that Souls fanatics don't think video games should be criticized for their design, and that no true fan of a game would take issue with a design choice. I'd love to see their views of music: "This album is perfect if you love the decisions the artist made, and if you are gonna have complaints, then maybe you just shouldn't have listened to it! Let's see you play the guitar if you have so much to say!"

You know what it actually is, though? Unneeded, and to say otherwise would be denying the reality of how successful these games are (particularly Elden Ring). If the lack of a pause button was actually the problem you pretend that it is, these games wouldn't be successful.

Plenty of people said its impossible ITT but theres still been not one single convincing argument as to why its impossible or why it shouldnt be implemented. Your game isnt beyond criticism
