it's awfully critical of an era that MAGA-ers considered "great". not sure if there's a more popular anti-nationalist song out there that people unironically prop up as nationalist. fucking reagan appropriated it as a patriotic anthem. REAGAN

(for those who don't know: the song is about how a vietnam veteran was utterly failed by the government after the vietnam war and how pointless the war was. but the chorus of "born in the USA" sounds patriotic, even though it's meant ironically)

"Born in the USA" has been used as an anthem by conservatives almost since the day it came out, which just proves that they only hear the big singalong chorus.

On a similar note, the 84 Reagan re-election campaign wanted to use "Little Pink Houses" by John Mellencamp for the same reason: "Aw, but ain't that America, for you and me/Ain't that America, something to see/Ain't that America, home of the free/Little pink houses for you and me". Not realizing in that case the song is actually an indictment of progress for the sake of progress, and wasted potential.

We haven't established who "them" are so I don't have an opinion about the accuracy of this. But I'm inclined to assume it's a hyperbolic claim given how often fascism is used to describe things that have nothing to do with forcible suppression of opposition or the subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation. If anything such accusations are usually from people who are involved in doing that exact thing.

the discussion isn't whether MAGA are fascists (they definitely are since the violent failed coup attempt, but that's besides the point), it's that the singer has been very loudly critical of them and absolutely fucking loathes them because most of his songs go against everything MAGA is proud of. and they KEEP using his songs

In fact I did. I learned that the song was 'We're Not Gonna Take It'. And it's Kari Lake who was using it. Except the only thing the article pointed out that he was opposed to was that the 1st line of the song is pro-choice. Being anti-abortion is not indicative of fascism.
