Yeah, didn't remember with the petal but as soon as I saw her shoe come down I knew it was Card captor. I still have official VHS tapes of the dubbed. Was a fun show as a kid.

One of my favorite shows during my tweener years. Used to air primetime on Teletoon (Canada's version of Cartoon Network).

Card Captura Sakura is an all time classic that has an extreme level of animation quality that even for its time was baffling and today would be practically unheard of. Like, Sakura has a different outfit almost every episode, and theyre mostly high linecount frilly dresses with tons of secondary action. Its best enjoyed slowly though. It largely relies on a villain of the week format for much of its runtime, so like Utena or Sailor Moon its easy to burn out if you don't take your time. It also features a few problematic depictions of romance. None of them go anywhere, but like it's still creepy when there's sexual tension between the teacher and one of sakura's classmates.

I remember reading that the US dub editted it in a weird way to try and make a minor character that is her male friend as a dual protagonist with Sakura when in the original version, it's clearly just about her. I guess to try and appeal more to boys and girls >_> Is that true?

I know of it..but never watched it as a kid .

It was one of my little sister's shows so I knew about it. I never watched it myself, although I did read up on it about a decade or so ago after discovering how influential it was.

I watched the KidsWB version back in the day and loved it. Watched a bit of the subbed version a while ago and still liked it. Should probably finish.

Serial Experiments Lain also had something like that. Lain's friend in middle school ends up having an affair with her teacher and in the time skip to the future, they end up being happily married lol. I forget if they had a kid or not though. I guess Japan had different views of that stuff back then >_>

It was a magical girl anime but also kind of a monster collector, right? I only vaguely remember it. I think I did buy a tie in card thing for it though. Never got to play because obviously nobody the fuck else did.

The animation really does look amazing. Its one thing thats always been on my list but yeah this kind of show Ive watched Sailor Moon which is an audiovisual treat but the episode plots are so repetitive and formulaic it hurts my brain

In Clear Card it's revealed that the student transfers to another school. Implying that the student and teacher's affection for one another was exposed, and the girl gets transferred as a cover. whether they did anything is left to the viewer.

Masculine narrator, episode recap focuses exclusively on how cool the actions are. Emphasis on the cards as these pokemon-like figures that need to be collected. Strong effort to try and include Li (and his cousin) in as many scenes as possible so that he at the minimum comes across as a deuteragonist instead of a side character.

The JP version is like, 95% Sakura looking wistfully at the camera and playing with magic, and we get 5% "the rest of the characters" in quick cut-ins.

I remember seeing a couple episodes of the Cardcaptors dub and thinking it wasn't very good. I'm told the actual Cardcaptor Sakura show is pretty good, but I'm not big on magical girls mostly so I never arsed myself to go back and check it out.

Oh, and of course the EN dub was called "Cardcaptors" instead of "Cardcaptor Sakura" to try and reinforce Li's pressence in the story.
