The effort to pull off a 1:1 emulation was likely far too difficult to waste money on when the idea was a plain ol nostalgia grab to begin with.

Should've just ported the Gamecube original even.

I wasn't planning on getting the remaster. Or at least anytime soon.

I really like Tales of Symphonia but my most recent playthrough was in 2021. So it's still too soon for me to want to play it again.

Frankly, this is unacceptable at this point and makes the port come off more as a cheap money grab than a celebration of Symphonias 20th Anniversary.

Why do people get shocked and surprised every time this happens. I remember the last time ToS was ported, even Jim Sterling made videos about how shitty a job it was. As soon as it was known it was gonna be another 30fps version port everyone should have known not to get their hopes up or waste their money.

The original Gamecube version is the only version with 60fps and Bandai Namco might have lost the source code for it, so they have to use the PS2 30fps version as a base for all future ports of the game. The problem is, the game engine from that version is apparently directly tied to the game's fps, to the point where trying to change it from 30 to 60 would completely break the game. I don't think anything short of completely rebuilding the game from the ground up would ever get us a full ToS remake with 60fps, but at that point, BN would rather put those resources into a brand new Tales game instead of going through all of that trouble for a remake. The 30fps thing is unfortunately an issue that will likely never be fixed.

That being said, this doesn't excuse the numerous other issues that this release is facing. Shitty loading times, fps drops below the standard 30, screen transitions missing, menus and text being messed up, a character being loaded with the wrong model too early that accidentally spoils something major later on... it's actually unbelievable how awful this port is. It's objectively the worst version of the game that's ever been released.

Genis's character model has an Exsphere on his hand from the beginning of the game, but he's not supposed to have that there until after the fight with the monster at the Human Ranch, which is hours into the game and after a major reveal about Exspheres. For some reason, it only does this in the PS4 version and not the Switch version, and only in the localized version and not the Japanese version.

Symphonia is low-hanging fruit and basically the FF7 for Tales Of. People are still picking up this shoddy port based on name alone.

But I agree, I wish Bamco did a little more with their Tales backlog. I'd love a Destiny duology pack, or even a remaster of Legendia, but it would be cool if we got all the PS3 games too (Graces, both Xillias). I remember for a while there was a rumor that Phantasia was getting a full-blown 3D remake too.

the only advantage the gamecube has over the ps2 port is it runs at 60FPS while all other versions run at 30FPs
now ive watced side by side comparison videos and i cannot tell the difference at all so this doent affect me

the pros for the ps2 version and its port is that they added more customization and made overlimit much easier to go into so sheena can actually use her summons

The PS2 version and the later ports had more content though. New artes, unison attacks, and high artes, cut-in animations for high arts and Sheena's summons, new side events, new costumes, bug fixes, and a bunch of other stuff.

Being in 60fps is the only benefit the GC version has over the first re-release on the PS3 and on Steam. Granted, it's a big benefit, but whether it's worth not having that extra content is up for debate.

Technically yes, but it's actually worse in just about every way. There's a bunch of bugs and technical issues in the Switch version, and the PS4 version isn't as bad but still has a few problems. It's a lazy, half-assed port, to the point where it's inferior to the PS3/Steam port we already had before.

Lazy ass ports, most likely because the original source code was lost. Until the mid-00s, most Japanese companies didn't bother to properly archive source code (besides Nintnendo, which has been properly archiving for a long time)
