Because people's enjoyment of life almost exclusively comes from their childhood + the childhood of others.

All bad wizards were Slytherins when they were in school!
What an odd coincidence, youd think people that live in a fucking dark dungeon for 9 months a year would be cheerful

Never really saw it like that. Just because Slytherin keeps popping out dark wizards, doesn't make them evil. If it popped out politicians, then I'd be concerned.

Even as a kid I thought it was dumb lol.

I like how in the 7th book, when you'd expect Rowling to have finally grown out of that, she has all the Slyths dip before the action starts and then later had to backtrack like "oh a bunch of them came back to fight I just totally forgot to add it in. Silly me!"

Books really needed some tertiary student characters not named Neville and Luna. >_>

Merlin was a Slytherin. He's one of the goodest wizards ever.

But no. It's a kid's book told mostly from the perspective of Harry who has a rivalry with Malfoy and Snape so of course slytherin is going to be depicted as the "bad" house.

Eh, I think "putting the good guy in Slytherin" only works in retrospect because we have the current books as a baseline.

Slytherin house was generally more closed off and attached to the dark side of magic due to their parents, which gave the house a good sense of mystery that wouldn't exist if Harry could just literally walk up and ask his housemate "Blimey, chap, what's all this barmy bollocks about a snake in the loo, innit?"

No. The books went out of their way by the end to say how things aren't black and white like that and lumping all the kids in one house as good and evil wasn't the right and accurate thing to be doing. I also disagree that the other two are "filler houses." They were sorted based off traits they have and value. Not all kids could be divided by either "brave" or "ambitious/cunning."

Hufflepuff is the house for chads like Cedric Diggory

I think Huffle/Raven being too irrelevant is overblown. The main characters need to be in 1 house so they can hang out and work together. And someone like Malfoy needs to be in the same house as grownup antagonists like Snape so they can appeal to that authority against Harry. Just because there are four houses doesn't demand we have an equally comprehensive understanding and view of each one. That's just an unmet desire of fans who read the house descriptions and imagine themselves sorted into one of the less explored ones.

The way I always understood it, the Slytherin house isn't actually "evil", it's just the house that most values ambition, pride and self-preservation. Combine all of that with the house's historical elitism and bigotry and it just tends to attract assholes.

To be fair, Gryffindor was only even in a losing position because of some insanely disproportionate punishment for breaking curfew.

Though also to be fair, that only happened because they were illegally smuggling a dragon out of the castle. Guess they're lucky they only lost 150 points and werent just chucked into Azkaban, those dirty criminal anklebiters
