Board 8 > IGN reports Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo all skipping E3 2023 show floor

E3's first physical event in four years was supposed to be a triumphant return for the trade show an opportunity to recapture some of the excitement of past conventions, which historically have been major showcase events for the games industry.
However, it appears that when E3 2023 hits the Los Angeles Convention Center in June, it will be without three of its most important draws. IGN has heard from multiple knowledgeable sources that Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo won't be part of E3 2023 or have a presence on the Los Angeles Convention Center showfloor.

As much as it sucks to admit it, yeah.

I guess it just doesn't make financial sense anymore but it's extremely sad

I don't get why MS wouldn't go - they're on the board of the ESA and the own a theater there. Do they just, like, have absolutely nothing to show? You'd think they could at least have Starfield and Forza...

Edit: apparently MS will be there in the neighboring theater, but that doesn't count as being "at" E3.

I get why Nintendo wouldn't be there if the rumors about TotK being the last major Switch game are true.

Same rumors say MP4 is on the next Switch.

Not sure I'd call Pikmin 4 a major release

My prediction is that Metroid Prime 4 gets the Breath of the Wild treatment. It launches on Switch simultaneously with the successor system.

It was dead as soon as they missed one year.

Once the companies realized noy having a show presence had no effect on their numbers at all, there was absolutely no reason to commit the time and resources anymore.

Microsoft will probably be at both. They're just not using the LA Convention Center and doing their own thing at the Microsoft Theater as they have in the past. We'll still get Xbox news that week. Sony hasn't done E3 since 2018, so this isn't surprising. Nintendo not being at E3 is surprising, but as mentioned before, they might be gearing up for their next console with Metroid Prime 4 as a launch title. And all the Switch might have left in June is Pikmin 4 and maybe a couple of smaller things.

Like, really, why? I loved E3. I even took vacation days a few times just so I could follow it live and watch all the trailers and read reactions etc
It was something great to look up to.
Is it as good as it was? no, it's not. But instead of wishing it dead, why don't you wish it would go back to how it was?

No huge surprise, Sony were already out, Microsoft were already hosting their own thing, this is just Nintendo not coming back.

As for why E3 is dying:

-No need for a big show floor event when digital events exist.

-Publishers increasingly prefer to control their own messaging.

-There are other places devs can network.

-The ESA is terrible and has leaked attendees info multiple times.

-Having a huge physical presence in LA for a week that limited people can even go to is an enormous cost for less and less gain.

-In terms of conferences, the big third party publishers had heavily declined and it was basically the Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo, then the Microsoft/Nintendo show.

the game awards is a three and a half hour show that celebrates games and also shows big releases /trailers from multiple devs

E3 is a multiple day event that is mostly an industry event that does not cater to fans. meanwhile the new virtual showcases cater to gamers

I agree that I miss the days where I would get super excited for E3 and everything it would bring, but it just hasn't had that same excitement for years, even before covid. It's a dying show and it just needs to be put out to pasture.

To be honest, I've never really cared about E3 that much and really only pay attention to it's highlights anyway. It's kinda just a relic at this point.

There will never be anything like when FFVII remake was announced live at the Sony E3 presser. Nothing even comes close. I also thought the show the next year was really cool too, even if it only focused on four actual games.

The idea that so many people are happy with youtube trailers and livestreams of pre-recorded "directs" is kind of depressing honestly. Even with "bad" E3 pressers there's a different energy that Nintendo directs/sony/xbox showcases lack.

Solid Snake in Brawl will forever be the peak E3 moment
