Tell them that.

"WHY ARE YOUR PRICES SO HIGH!?"

"I have 0 bearing on the prices or what items we carry"

"I KNOW THAT!"

"Then why did you ask me?"

Don't try to pull the wool over my eyes. I see employees going around putting those price tags on all the shelves.

Tell them "Because the election was STOLEN, it's all Biden's fault, Trump should be president!", then they will run away or you're getting some strange tonight.

I mean, the first one definitely not, but as long as they're not being abusive isn't part of a cashiers job interacting/dealing with customers?

Like, a hairdressers job on paper is to cut your hair, but it's implied that part of that job is also making sure you're not spending a 20 minute haircut in an awkward, dead silence.

Well this is one way to tell us all you've never worked in retail or food service.

I'm pretty sure you made this exact same comment to me before. But you're right, I've only ever had jobs that didn't require dealing with customers, generally stocking.

But if your job does involve dealing with customers, why do you feel it isn't part of your job to...deal with customers? Assuming they're not being abusive.

Fine, I'll spell it out. Listening to you gripe is not our job. Period. We aren't your therapist, your buddy, your whatever the fuck. The job is to provide the service (whether it's ringing up your purchase or carrying your plates or whatever) and to answer relevant questions in a friendly and pleasant way. Listening to you bitch about the price is not helping you, nor is it answering your questions. And as a matter of fact it actually puts us in a really shitty position.

See, a complaint has to be interpreted as an actual real complaint. Regardless of it being out of our hands. When a customer starts bitching about things that we have zero control over, there's only so many ways it can go.

1: We tell them the truth. "Prices are higher because corporate knows you'll still pay it and they want higher profits. Welcome to capitalism". This does not end well, because part of the job of you know... representing your employer? Means you can't fucking talk shit about them to customers. That gets around, fired.

2: We just don't fucking give an answer. Oh shit they weren't just venting at us, they genuinely thought a fucking store level employee was going to answer questions about corporate financial structure and pricing. They are mad that I ignored their very real complaint. They call corporate to complain! (i've had this happen btw). Might get fired!

3: We take you seriously, make up some BS damage control that we hope sounds reasonable and gets you to fucking leave.

This is not the same shit as "having a conversation with your hair dresser". Don't fucking vent to minimum wage employees that are serving you about their employer. It puts us in a shitty position and it's NOT our job to listen to you bitch.

Those are fair points, actually. I guess I took TC to mean someone complaining in general about prices getting higher, not the prices at that specific store.

Edit: Not TC, the guy who said just venting. To me, venting is "Can you believe the price of eggs these days?"

That's another specific point on the hairdresser that i can connect more to as a server.

The unwritten part of the job isn't "make sure they aren't sitting in complete silence for the whole cut!" it's "create a relaxing atmosphere." This means getting a read for whether or not the customer WANTS a conversation, or silence.

Also, on the topic of shit to not do from a server standpoint because it puts in a shitty position. Don't jokingly complain about the food. A lot of folks like to do this. "How's the dessert tasting?" *points at empty dish* "It was horrible HAHAHA!" 1: it's not funny, 2: we literally HAVE to continue forward with the notion that you aren't joking.

Yeah, but if you don't at least demonstrate you have the ability to effectively make small talk, you likely will have trouble finding work in a salon/hairdresser.

But regardless, you're right it has no bearing on the topic.
