This issue here just shows that some people on the right stand for nothing.

If I got my PhD. I wonder if I could change my Screen Name to Dr. Dawg. And 80/80

I do think it's silly when non-medical PhDs ask to be called "doctor", but they do literally have doctorates.

Academic doctorates are more rigorous than MDs. But the only lab spaces I've been in where people addressed other people as "Dr. X" have been MD led labs, and med school centered labs.

I think the whole "pretentious PhDs demanding to be called Doctor" is just not a real scenario.

I'm just saying I don't personally call them "Doctor" because their everyday profession is not the one we colloquially know as "doctor". Unless they asked me to do so.

I've never met a single PhD, or even an MD for that matter, ask people to refer to them as Dr. in social situations. Most PhDs I know even explicitly ask colleagues at work to not to call them Dr.

Many women PhDs will insist on the title in front of students because they are often explicitly disrespected by students for being women.

So Dr. Tendo. If you are like tying do a business deal with your start up and they keep calling you Mr. Tendo. You never want to say... That's Dr. Tendo ?

Yeah, for me it's basically

First Name > Full Name > Dr. Last Name > Mr. Last Name.

because I am not in a situation where I have to worry about being disrespected (as CovXY said, minorities and women often will make sure people use their title because if they don't they tend to be more disrespected). But if someone is insisting on being formal I'd rather they get it right than not.

Edit: To be clear, this is still mostly in a work setting. I don't care what the electric company representative, etc. call me on the phone.

I do think it's kind of funny how insecure people get about the title of "Dr." though. Like I know there *exist* people who are really pretentious who insist everyone calls them Dr. but most settings that I've worked in that hasn't really been the case. But there are people out there who don't have an advanced degree who think that people use a title because they think they're better than you, blah blah blah, and it's usually the type of people who think of themselves as being particularly smart who have this problem. There are dumb(er) people with doctorates and smart(er) people without them, but I guess it's threatening to their ego for some reason that there are people who (by their own interpretation) are deemed "smarter" than them.

Also for the "I only call my doctor Dr. ____ thank you very much"...why is it that you call your doctor that? You don't call your barber Barber _____ or your banker Banker ______.

Medussa posted...

I think it sounds weird but I don't dislike it as a matter of it being "disrespectful" or something. I don't really like Mr. First Name either though so idk.

I call my PCP Dr. First Name because he was my dad's good friend in high school, so he's closer to me than my other medical professionals. He'll tell me stories about my dad and my dad will tell me stories about the doctor.

Sorry I meant more like... why do people never think twice about doing that? I refer to them as Dr. but that's because it's their title. But I introduce people as Dr. so-and-so when they have PhDs as well (at which point they can say whether they're fine with just being _____ ). Or in a non-formal setting I'll just say "hey this is my friend First Name".
