It's not even culture war (solely) it's some weird form pride and patriotism.

There's a portion of the UK that gets irrationally angry and denial heavy about any of it's flaws. You even see that on CE.

If a house is on fire a guy saying "It's not on fire." and walking off would get roughly as much support as someone saying "We need to put out the fire!"

Sounds like the USA as well to me. Is it just human nature at this point? That's a depressing thought.

Its valid to think this is shitty but its complete diversion tactics from the government.

Just to show how stupid this is the entire thing affects about 30 people a year. We literally have the media going on about this for the last few days non stop for 30 people a year. Its an important issue but there are many many more important issues affecting millions of people this is just being used as a distraction for.

Back in my day, children didn't have a gender until they turned 18 and moved out of the house.

Scotland should not be able to put laws like this forward that affect the rest of the UK. That's the problem that Westminster have with it. They've overstepped their boundaries.

They should be able to enact laws that apply to Scotland. As far as I can tell, this law would recognise trans rights in Scotland alone.

recognise trans rights seems a weirdly antagonistic way of putting it.

The law already exists for people to self identify. All the recent change does is allow people 16 and 17 to do what older people already can.

The UK Government says that there's already existing laws in place for the rest of the UK relating gender equalities. This act in Scotland would cause a conflict between two regions of the UK in regards to which law trumps which.

Seems pretty obvious how this could be settled without England taking a steaming dump on Scottish parliament: this Scottish law applies to Scotland, the other law applies to England.

If England doesn't like it, maybe they should let Scotland be an independent country and make their own laws instead of neutering their ability to govern their own country.

God if only the sunset of the British Empire would be lit in hues of pink and blue.

Tbh I'm not sure what they're getting at there. Sure, Sturgeon is a politician like any other and we can only trust her as far as we can throw her, but as far as her views/platform goes I can't imagine someone being further away from Trump.

Unless they're drawing a direct line between scottish independence and Trump's brand of nationalism.

I will honestly say I'd heard next to nothing about Nicola Sturgeon until this bill came up last year and TERFs started complaining about how awful she was.

Part of me suspects, as I am huffed up on mass amounts of copium, that he's just choosing to not give the Tory's any the collect right wing media (read, all of the UK media) easy hit pieces against Labour like with Corbyn.

Lol, anyone with an R next to them will win in their districts. Even with their districts gerrymandered to the extreme levels though Boebert still barely won. If culture war was a winning strategy for them they wouldn't have just barely squeaked out control of the house despite being heavily favored by past trends to take control by a large margin and wouldn't have lost ground in the Senate.

All their silly culture war shit drives away any voters that aren't hard core Fox News watchers or deep south bible beaters, who are going to vote for them anyway.
