I kinda adore the big sister/little brother vibes the Chloe/Jean support has going on please don't give them a paired ending where they hook up

which is gayer, being gay or whatever louis/rosado have goin on in their support. like their C support alone has more chemistry than some marriage proposals in other FEs

and speaking of being gay, WOW goldmary put the moves on etie really fuckin fast in that A support

It's not very authentic though. Normally when Sigurd runs ahead of everyone else he just kills all the enemies.

fuck yeah playable Saphir if only I had room on my team for a mediocre armor knight. good chapter, I liked the touch where they tell you outright that there aren't any survivors and if you go to the houses anyway it just spawns corrupted (of course they have loot so you still wanna do it). Mauvier definitely gonna change sides and I feel like Marni is unfortunately gonna come with him.

C20 was pretty great too but did they really make it so you can't move through fog of war...?

wow alear's VA really nailing this "I am devastated by this shocking plot twist" voice. actually never mind it got better but the lines in the FMV were baaad.

I believe this is the first game where you can't move your character into fog of war, unless that was something in 1 to 3 I don't know about.

Also I think Saphir is a warrior? I know she looks like an armor knight.

No, typically you can move into FOW but if you hit an enemy your move immediately ends. It lends itself to some risky strategies where you can scout into the fog by undoing your moves until you find an enemy. I can understand why they did away with it but I think the solution needs work, since this way slows things down.

lmao probably, I'll admit I didn't check and just went off appearance. I'm actually having a big problem telling classes apart in this game, which is probably a personal problem but damn it makes me long for the more abstracted style of the GBA games. ...In fact I'm having issues with terrain and enemy ranges too so maybe I'm just going blind.

I also didn't even realize Fogado was riding a camel instead of a horse until yesterday because I have the animations turned off and it looks the same from above lol

I compared it to the game's other horses and the game's other camels and it looks like neither?? why is the cupido horse so fucked up. maybe something about the color or its dumb horse armor is throwing me off.

Of the cutscene direction in this game is really bad, 100%, no denials from me. Like, it was bad in 3H but it's worse here somehow. Intelligent Systems farms out a lot of the stuff in these games nowadays, including the CGs which are fine here, but the in-engine cutscenes REALLY need to go to some specialist team.

I think the thought process for IS is "well before in the old games it was just sideways portraits talking to eachother and this is clearly better than that", but...it's not. Frankly, high quality 2D portraits would be better than the bland dolly shot cutscenes of people standing around in 3H and Engage. As it standsz its like....a step up from cutscenes in Digimon Cybersleuth, which are essentially old Fire Emblem cutscenes but with 3D models? Except there there's a ton of expression in the models at least, it looks pretty solid, maybe even better. The standards for this should obviously be higher.

It's just a real shame be she the BATTLE animations and visual direction is so good.

How do you all feel about Engage's references to the previous FE games? I'm always really interested in how games reference other games, especially in crossover games like this one.

Overall, I think they did a good job, especially with the maps referencing the previous games. The only misses I feel are Celica, Lyn, and Hector. It sucks that the only FE7 map is the Armads map, which I always felt was a really weak FE7 map. I remember reading that Sands of Time (Denning map) would have been really good for a Hector DLC map and I'm inclined to agree. Lyn maps are always going to be weak, since Lyn Mode is a tutorial. Maybe they could have used the Dread Isle map with Uhai since it's kinda Sacae-releated. Celica's Echoes map are all bad, so that was going to be a miss regardless.

Also, Lucina's map is terrible, but I'll give it a pass because 1) it's the first Emblem Paralogue you get, so I appreciate a beginner one and 2) I imagine it's a dunk on Awakening maps in general to literally just include a flat open field as the Awakening map.

I overall liked the selections for the paralogues. Not so much the DLC ones so far outside of Tiki though, kind of don't like anybody the DLC Paralogue maps.

Excluding the Lucina tutorial, the only ones that stand out to me as weak in the main game are Celica's because...lol...and Micaiah's, which was good in theory but is just way too easy to rush and the entire conceipt of the map is wasted.

Story-wise they were implemented pretty poorly, I agree. It was never going to be particularly graceful but they could have done better. Maybe explain the trial concept once in a non-optional chapter so it doesn't have to happen each time.

The actual maps I thought were pretty good. Roy's kinda looks like crap because they tried to recreate the abstracted GBA terrain icons with the current non-abstracted graphics, and I couldn't even tell you which chapter Lyn's is based on despite FE7 being the game I'm most familiar with. Overall I just wish they were a little harder, which is maybe a complaint I have with the game in general. It's way too easy to end up overleveled, especially when you're grinding out 13 paralogues in a rather short span of time.

Both my playthrough so far used a chapter 16 character, so I never tackle any of the paralogues until after 16, which definitely results in an easier time.
Of course that means the Erika one is being done at the expected level, and of course that's by far the hardest one.

The Marth one could be hard...if even a single one of those items was even a little worth getting, but since they aren't you just ignore the entire left side of the map.

In Marth's, the enemies on the right ignore you until you attack them. I finished the left side before fighting the enemies on the right, it wasn't too tough.

That makes sense. I thought it looked more like FE6 than FE7 but I assumed they wouldn't do that after giving every other character an appropriate level. My choice probably would have been Noble Lady of Caelin, or maybe the final chapter of Lyn mode, but of course neither of those take place in Sacae...
