I've been looking at getting my first gun after an attempted home invasion last week. I can deadass walk in a gun store and buy an AK47, leave that same day with it, no background check or license needed good lord

Why would you want a full size rifle for home defense when a compact handgun is several times better?

I guess its better than a shotgun at any rate.

I mean, in Arkansas, I figure it would be illegal NOT to own a gun.

You literally cannot do what you said in the OP. You have to give them information and they immediately send that to the FBI to check. They will reply with a proceed/wait/call the cops depending on the results.

For home defense, a shotgun is likely better as you only have to pull the trigger once and you get several projectiles. Granted if you practice with your pistol you could be as effective but for ease of acess, a shotgun with one round has serious stopping power.

That's for models made before 1986, any after that are legal in the states I can buy and leave with same day

Here you can get M4 easy, they even provide the option for fitting m203s if youre a newbie

Lets assume you are using a Mossberg 500 with a full size barrel and tube with a home defense load of some 2 3/4 Buckshot

In a home invader situation less than 5 yards away your spread with that buckshot is going to be about a 3 inch group.

It is going to hit very hard, but you still need to be pretty damn accurate. If you have to hit a follow up shot, that pump action is not going to be anywhere near as efffective as a semi auto pistol in that respect. (that and if you are not well trained, you could easily short stroke in a tense situation like that)
That and you have half the capacity for follow up shots compared to a pistol with a full 17 round mag. And that pistol loaded with some proper defensive rounds can be very capable of a one shot stop.

That and firing that shotgun in doors is going to make you fucking deaf.

With equal training, a pistol is gonna beat a shotgun for home defense in every case.

Google (and literally anyone in the US who has bought from a licensed dealer) can tell you that he is correct. They run a background check before they give you the gun.

Yep. Federal crime if a business sells a firearm without a background check.

I think you are trolling, or lying yourself at this point. Or you completely misunderstood what he said to you. If he us selling firearms as a dealer without doing background checks he is committing a very very serious crime.

I just bought a pistol, they made me fill out background check paperwork but I was able to go in there, pick out a pistol, buy it, and walk out with it in under an hour lol

Even if you're not talking about cheap civilian knockoffs, you very likely wouldn't be getting an AK-47 anyway. It would probably be an AKM or a Chinese Type 56.

This has been the most amusing part of my home defense journey, every associate at the gun store had a wildly different opinion. One guy said a shotgun was the only answer, another guy said a pistol was the best as long as you had basic training. Another guy said he would never choose a shotgun over a rifle because what if you miss? A lady there had the same opinion as you thinking I should get a 9 mm, but another guy there thought I should get a 22 pistol because of zero recoil and the ability to hit multiple shots. Every one of them acted like the others were clueless

thats because they all tend to have their own positives depending on the circumstance and many peoples circumstances are different. then you have the caliber discussions on top of that.

in general though 22's are looked down on because of their reliability. you dont want your weapon to fail in a serious encounter and 22's (semi-auto's especially) are not the most reliable things out there. not to say yours will have that issue, but make sure what ever ammo you choose to use that that taurus will run it. take it to the range and put a box or two of ammo through it of each individual brand you might be interested in. use what ever runs reliably in it and you should be good to go.

Yeah a .22LR is serviceable, but not the best option.

A 9mm or 45 would be my main choices due to a number of factors (price of ammo, training with the calibers, performance, sound profile, ease of use).

But overall you didnt make a horrific choice if it came down to needing it. Just get in a lot of trigger time and invest in some good ammo.

PA, too.

You do go through a PICS check here, which is essentially a background check. I assume you do there, as well.

Re: choice of gun/caliber, I wouldve suggested 9mm. The previous drawbacks of the 9mm round (less stopping power) has been mitigated over time by superior ammunition designs.

That's what I did. Full sized 9mm with a light, and hopefully a suppressor this year or early next year.

Every single one of my 22s have jammed at the range. Good luck with the home defense on that.

And since returning isn't an option, here is some advice, do not ever buy bulk ammo (such as 500 in a milk carton) unless it is strictly for the range because 10% or more will be bent and dented and even the ones that don't look dented or bent but are will jam up on you .

If you're getting a .22, I suggest a proven, reliable gun like the Zip .22
