https://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-5/one-piece-odyssey/critic-reviews

After mostly musou spinoffs (Pirate Warriors) and action adventure beat'em ups (Unlimited Adventure/Cruise/World), One Piece is back as straight up Dragon Quest. The last time they tried this we had disastrous results with Romance Dawn on the 3DS, but this time they stuck bit more closely to the Dragon Quest formula while giving it a unique battle system that actually highlights the strengths of each crew member. It certainly wasn't for everyone though as some reviewers had issues with its slow pacing The result though is technically the best reviewed One Piece game to date with a 79 currently on OC!

DASHGAMER.com - 9/10
Pique adaptation with original writing that consolidates everything we know and love of One Piece, converging it with the best elements of a Persona or Dragon Quest, then making it its own experience is simply fantastic. Prepare yourself because One Piece Odyssey has already primed itself as one of the greatest JRPGs youll ever experience.

Checkpoint Gaming - 8/10
Fans are in good hands with One Piece: Odyssey. In fact, more anime games should be following in strides made here. On offer is a wonderful adventure that feels like a theme park visit to the series lands, old and new. Characters shine and bounce off each other well both in and out of cutscenes as colourfully as they should. Some areas need better story pacing and quality of life improvements such as better checkpointing and save states, and going more all-in on different story timelines wouldve also gone a long way. And its testing to see manga artist Eiichiro Odas troublesome female character design. However, its a blast of an RPG. Flaws are more than made up for in a thoroughly enjoyable anime affair along with an unexpected and very welcome spin on the known turn-based RPG formula. Smooth sailing lies ahead with One Piece: Odyssey.

Twinfinite - 8/10
Fans of One Piece and turn-based RPG lovers alike will be more than pleased with what One Piece Odyssey has to offer. Its combat offers a great new spin on the genres trademark battle systems, and is far deeper than one would expect from an anime-inspired title. Even if it isnt perfect, the game takes chances in the best way possible and could very well lay the groundwork for much more promising One Piece games in the future.

TheSixthAxis - 8/10
One Piece Odyssey is the ultimate adventure for a diehard One Piece fan. It's touching to be able to revisit the people and places making up some of the series most iconic story arcs in a way that feels rich and immersive rather than skimmed-through and streamlined. Some quirks in the overworld exploration and a few combat design flaws might make this a but of an unpolished RPG on paper, but if you've spent the last two decades with Luffy and his crew, then the shine and charm of One Piece Odyssey is undeniable.

Push Square- 8/10
No matter whether you're a hardcore One Piece fan or a complete newcomer, One Piece Odyssey is an utter joy of a JRPG. Its combat system remains incredibly enjoyable throughout, and new mechanics provide depth and strategy in droves. Most certainly the highlight of the experience, but with fun exploration to boot, you're always assured of a good time. One Piece Odyssey plays a lot like Dragon Quest XI, and it's not that far off being just as good as it.

Digitally Downloaded - 8/10
I did have a delightful time with One Piece Odyssey. The best way to summarise it is as a breezy, easy-playing JRPG that you can knock off over several weeks and a few solid sessions. The developers have crafted something blissfully over-the-top and funny, and done One Piece a grand homage to celebrate its 25th year, while at the same time very cleverly figuring out how to make a 25-year-old anime as entertaining for newcomers and those not familiar with Luffy and the crew as it is for those who have watched every single episode. That is some incredible work.

Noisy Pixel - 8/10
One Piece Odyssey is ultimately a story of friendship, a central theme of the series shown through the eyes of a new character to pass judgment and to understand why the bonds of this crew are so strong. While this adventure might retell past quests, there are enough subtle changes to spark some real emotion. Still, the low difficulty and reliance on auto-battle will leave hardcore JRPG fans disinteresting. However, the exploration and numerous ways to dump dozens of hours into this experience make this a One Piece adventure for everyone.

Screen Rant - 7/10
Despite these pitfalls, One Piece Odyssey is a success in storytelling, animation, and combat style. With a satisfying conclusion, One Piece Odyssey opens up a new world of potential storytelling in the One Piece universe. It's also proof that, if done correctly, games adapting iconic or expansive manga can be strong - if not groundbreaking - entries in the JRPG genre.

CGMagazine - 4/10
One Piece Odyssey does not respect your time. It moves at a glacial pace, where you are forced to see inconsequential scenes and complete unimportant objectives that do nothing more than pad out the games length. It makes the Straw Hat Pirates boring, reducing their charm to little more than a series of gags. And it turns what would be interesting combat into a bore because its progression system makes it feel as though youre not improving.

Im glad games are finally getting called out for this. There are more games available than ever. I dont need filler, even if it is appropriate for a game based on a shonen

I don't know anything about this Dan Rizzo fella but I'm not sure how much I trust his opinion if the peak of a pretty important genre of video games only merits a 9/10 from him.

Is it?

They can't do the full arc since it didn't finish in the manga until the game was basically finished and the anime won't be done for a good year.

So why not do like the most recent movie and just leave Wano out until it's finished. Otherwise are you just doing Wano pre-raid? What is the point of that?

Even the latest Pirate Warriors did it's best to cover Wano, and the game was better for it. I'm sorry but Odyssey has no excuse.

I'd rather they wait until the arc has ended in the anime and do a DLC pack including the whole arc than including it at launch and having to leave out the ending to avoid spoilers.

Regardless of whatever the dev cycle was like, I would assume content implementation is at least a little tougher between a story driven RPG versus a paint by numbers 4th entry of a musou franchise.

It seems pretty straightforward to me. The game uses memories that the Strawhats access to relive moments of the manga and get their abilities back. The Wano arc is finished. The responsible decision would have been to delay the game until the Wano memories were ready.

Oh please, the story is literally "they get stranded on an island and lose their abilities." You could drop this game off at any point in the timeline and the story would work.

My dude I know they're gussying it up and trying something new, which good on 'em, but this game is still just another quarterly licensed Shounen Jump release they're throwing out there. This isn't FFXVI.

Ish, but they're doing the memory island storyline that they've done a few times before to justify bringing back old enemies, so the memories themselves are from the manga and rely on the audience being familiar with the plot.

This is why it's a dumb argument. We know game dev time takes a few years. It's reasonable to believe the game was being actively produced and planned when Wano was taking place. The plan to not include Wano was probably done in pre production.

If it's reasonable for them to delay the game to finish up the arc, then they would have to do it with all of them egghead included, and every other arc after that. Obviously they can't do that, and needed a stopping point.

Alright Bandai employees. Argue all you want that developing a game is hard, it doesnt change the fact that most fans want the latest arc to be included since the arc is complete. This game stops at Dressrosa which ended years ago. Need I remind you that Dressrosa is arguably one of the worst arcs?

I also think Dressrosa may be the worst arc, and that's JUST from the manga.

I never got why anybody liked it, there's like nothing good there. I actually dropped OP for about a year and a half+ while it was going on. Kind of a culmination of why post skip OP as a whole just doesn't do much for me, I kind don't like any if it other than a couple bits of Wano.

And Whole Cake which was great.
