"Rich people wear cheap clothes and driver beaters!"

My brother in Christ, what kind of weird-ass cope is this? Yeah, brokies drive Lambos. Okay. It's like the people who talk about the difference between a "millionaire mindset" and a "billionaire mindset," even though they work at a gas station.

I've never heard people say that only poor people buy that stuff. What I have heard is that people who are billionaires tend to not flex with designer shit while people who are moderately rich do

all the suits billionaires wear are enormously expensive.

Guys like Bill Gates may not wear stuff with brand names stitched onto them, but rest assured anything he's wearing is tailored and made out of extremely comfortable luxury material

there are particular subcultures in various places you could cite where people wear a lot of their net wealth, but rich people aren't buying their clothes at Walmart

But w/e if thats their preferred moneysink hobby then power to them

The idea that rich people dont buy nice cars is silly too
Plenty dont, plenty do

I believe the correct term is 'ghetto fabulous' in regards to poor people trying to look rich.

This behavior isn't necessarily limited to the low/middle income brackets either. Rich people though, at least those from old money have little need to flex. At least not outside of their usual bubbles.

I think it comes from that Millionaire Next Door book. Basically when you see someone flexing, they might have a decent income but very little savings. Or theyre super rich. Typical millionaires blend in.

Whot? Wow, I wish I was poor enough to drive a...Lamborghini.

Although some wealthy people do stay wealthy by being smart and frugal.

Depends on how you define poor.

It's definitely true that a lot of middle class people tend to spend beyond their means because they want to be perceived as being richer than they are. They'll usually oversplurge in one or two ostentatious ways while slumming it in a bunch of others to make up the lack of money. Like the sort of person who drives a sportscar but lives in a dump. Or someone who's wearing designer brands but eating ramen.

From what I've seen from Bill Gates his clothes, at least his suits, don't look particularly tailored. I'm seeing a lot of collar gaps, gaping at the chest, and things like that. But I don't doubt the material and construction of those garments isn't good, you're right that he's not wearing cheap polyster suits held together with glue but good, quality fabrics with most likely a full canvas construction, but they're not garments that are particularly tailored to his body.

When I see politicians and the rich wear suits a lot of times they don't look like they fit very well.

There's a sweet spot where that statement is true in the middle class, but the statement is fallacious anyway since it presumes the reason people are poor is they spend all of their money on unnessecary luxuries, rather than the fact that some people are just sort of fucked by society and will never not be poor because of it. Meanwhile, once you're in the multi-million networth, you start spending money on dumb luxury bullshit because "the fuck else am I gonna do with it I guess? I want it and I can afford it, so I'll have it."

Well it is pretty weird for anyone except the filthy rich to buy brand new cars or expensive clothes. Why buy a brand new $20k car when a $5k used car is far more cost effective? Why buy expensive clothes when cheap clothes are more cost effective? Fashion in general is pretty cringe, especially shoe culture
