They seemingly can't pick up on political/social subtext when it comes to media, and when they do, it either has to be anvilled onto their heads or they completely misinterpret it.

absolutely not, and being ahead on the meme war was a big deal back in 2016

like, no, they aren't funny and never will be, but they understand memes. they understand how to propagate their shitty ideas with them.

Only a Sith Conservative deals in absolutes.
It's just easier to ignore subtlety and subtext when rousing rabble.

I think it's worse than them simply being stupid or ignorant. They pick up on social and political subtext well enough, but actively rationalize it away in order to downplay it, or even appropriate it for themselves. Of course, it may be reflexive, and not something they do consciously.

Not talking about memes. More like deeper themes within movies, TV, etc.,

Best we can do on gamefaqs, because Allen / CBS / Redventures / Fandom doesn't realize the <strike> tag exists.

yes. they habitually watch Fox News, which spouts so much fake bullshit that they were taken to court over it and forced to categorize themselves as "opinion news" because everything they say is counterfactual. and conservatives who watch it are stupid and gullible enough to think they're the ones getting the REAL news.

So basically when something left-leaning comes out that makes their themes and politics overt, they no longer have any room to rationalize it away and that's where the backlash comes in?

That actually checks out.

conservatives were never ahead on the "meme war" lol, whatever that means, and what does that even have to do with media literacy?

I would also say that lately, it has become more advantageous to accuse media of being political when it isn't explicit or even implicit - it's obvious that their outrage at, say, that recent He Man cartoon was complete hogwash and their feelings aren't real. I think this is a separate matter entirely from their media literacy, though. It's a direct and calculated fascist attack on the media landscape as a whole.
