And bonus points for the main villain having the balls to fight with his fists against a party of 4 weilding weapons. Beautifully detailed and expansive world; gorgeous soundtrack; I actually quite liked the combat, and wish Gambits / customizable algorithms were more common with AI companions; and Balthier remains one of my favorite characters in the franchise. But for reference, FF X was the last game in the series that I genuinely loved, and it's hard to deny that FF XII was the beginning of the end. XII just didn't have any heart in its story. DoesntMatter 01/09/23 10:53:47 AM #22:	i really liked it when i first played it back in the day because i appreciated the narrative deviations from your standard JRPGs into more mature themes and political intrigue. i didn't realize it at the time, because i had never really played any WRPGs at that point, but coming back to it later i realized that a lot of those deviations was Square trying to make a JRPG that was more like a WRPG. of course, coming back to the Zodiac edition on Steam years later, after having played many many real WRPGs, i realized that FF12 mostly came up short on many of these ways they tried to make it more like a WRPG, and still had many overdone JRPG trappings as well, so it just didn't measure up now that i had some solid things to compare it to. i did enjoy the Gambit system though. i'm not sure why it was so hated by so many. to me, it is really similar to the Tactics system in Dragon Age: Origins, which is pretty much my favorite combat system ever, and to my knowledge is pretty universally hailed as one of the best parts of the game. --- It don't matter. Anony1125 01/09/23 4:19:17 PM #42:	I'm actually replaying it for the first time in years right now. As mentioned, I love the fast forward feature. Makes it so much less tedious to traverse the enormous distances, which helps me appreciate the world more. Loved the bounties and rare hunts, it was always fun tracking those down. Hated how useless the highest-level magic spells were in the original, but I heard that got fixed in ZA? I'll find out, anyway. Solid 8/10 for me, there's a lot I like but it just feels like there's something missing. The characters from VI, VII, and IX were just so much more interesting and engaging to me, and while the world was okay it just didn't have any really memorable locations like in the other games. I don't know how much of it is nostalgia, but considering I played VI after XII I don't think all of it is. I thought the game visually looks stunning but the story is the worst story they have ever told. I'm not a fan of the battle system but to each their own on that one. I think they could have done a couple things to really improve on the story: 1 - Don't include Vaan or Penelo. They do nothing for the plot, and after many years we now know they were added in last second. 2 - Really build Ashe's storyline. Much like Laguna from FF8, she needed her story to be told from the background at every major story break until we add her to the party. Really show that she is trying to repair her reputation throughout the kingdom. 3 - Build up Vayne more as a character. That's about it. I was intimidated by Omega for the longest time too, but when I finally got around to fighting him, he was an absolute pushover compared to Yiamzat and even Hell Wyrm.
