Like he had a rough three seasons in the 90's and 2000's, the show got cancelled and revived once between the second and third season, and the show finally got axed for good. He then spent four years doing nothing but - seemingly - trying to get Family Guy back on the air again.

Now he's pushing 50, and he has to walk into a VA booth for a show he created but doesn't control to say "shut up Meg" and laugh like a moron for the 99th day in a row. Every now and again he gets to make an Orville episode, but then he has to go over to TBS and voice an effeminate alien and a lantern-jawed Jarhead moron on another show he created but doesn't control.

Do you think he ever resents the drive that put him in this prison of his own creation? Do you think he wishes he could go back in time and change everything?

I'm sure he's very upset about the consistent paycheck for what is ultimately very little of his time.

I think youre underestimating how much money hes making from both shows and overestimating how much time he needs to spend in the booth.

And American Dad is great.

If he really wanted to stop I'm sure they could find a voice actor who can replace him or use AI voice acting or something.

I am being pretty flippant, but regarding time in the booth, McFarlane voices Peter, Brian, Stewie, Carter Pewterschmidt, the main doctor character - a Stewie and Brian-focused episode has McFarlane voicing the bulk of every episode's lines.

And I did always have a soft spot for American Dad. Actually started watching Family Guy this past week after I got COVID as a comfort-watch sort of thing, which is what made me think of making this topic.

Recent seasons of FG are a lot different than most people think. The show has a very Police Squad/Airplane tone now.

American Dad is an anomaly. It's been on the air close to 20 years while getting progressively better.

Maybe it's gotten to the point where it's annoying or he doesn't like it too much, but that's a lot of money.

If anything, he's probably hoping they figure out some ai solution before he dies, yet isn't too old so he can have fun with his money

Yeah Family Guy revived so that American Dad can become its own thing. I admit after a certain season, even AD kinda falls off a bit (at least imo. They never really topped that one season with the hot tub and tornado), but the middle period American Dad is fucking legendary

Couldn't care too much about FG, but the Stewie/Brian adventure episodes are pretty fun imo

As for Seth McFarlane, like I think at a certain point if you earn that much money after getting everything you wanted to do, saying Meg every few weeks isn't the worst

With the exception of the season where Steve's principal appeared in most of the episodes. He's a funny character, but when they began shoehorning him into every episode it was almost unwatchable.

That's my only gripe with American Dad, and it's not even a permanent issue.

He willingly does the voices in interviews and tv appearances and seems like he still genuinely enjoys it. I don't think he's a no name that has to do it for people to be like "Oh, he's THAT guy". He's a talented voice actor that still has fans happy to hear his voice work. If you had evidence he was tired of it, that would be one thing. But without evidence you just seem like a negative nancy >_>

I know theres a lot of voices, but he almost assuredly gets scripts well in advance and has his own recording space. Its probably a couple of days a year with some light extra work for tens of millions of dollars a year from royalties, VA pay, and EP credits, not to mention that the whole thing was the source for at least two mega paydays.

Seth is happy with his situation.

With how random both shows can get he has creative freedom to work almost any random scene that he feels the need to put to screen. Without even having to put any effort into story direction or, hell, even making it funny. It can just be forgotten about as the bad joke of the episode and move on.

Disenchantment, you mean? It wasn't a flop at all. So far it has 40 episodes on Netflix, which is no small feat for a Netflix show. It must be doing something right or they'd have cancelled it a long time ago.
