if something like that really did happen, while it would suck that the wife didn't believe him, it's also difficult to imagine that a kid so young would make up a story like that to hurt either party.

I would forgive the wife. I mean, what young child will make up a story like that? Anyone would believe a child for saying that. I'd be pissed as fuck at the child though.

The kid is 7 so yes id forgive her. Getting past it would take a while but there's not much a 7 year old could do that id call unforgivable. The wife? Fuck her.

It's possible many years from now I might reconcile with my daughter. But I'd probably never forgive the wife

This. Someday the daughter will realize the magnitude of what she has done, and it will likely weigh very heavy on her.

The only mistakes are the mistakes we don't learn from. Get back with the wife, put the kid up for adoption, then get vasectomy/tubal ligation.

You know its usually the opposite, the kid worrying that they caused their parents to divorce when they had nothing (at least directly) to do with it. But here its literally the kid that caused the divorce.

I dont know if Id be willing to forgive either of them, thats pretty rough.

I could forgive the wife. Like someone else said, what (normal/not spiteful, vindictive and pure evil) 7 year old kid would make up something like "daddy's messing around with another woman behind your back" just to get back at their parent? It's like your kid telling you that uncle alfonse touched their private area. Of course you're going to believe them because that's not something that would normally come out of a child's mouth. And yeah it's fucked up that the wife didn't trust him but now she knows the truth and has to live with the guilt. I think that's punishment enough.

The kid...that's harder but I think eventually I could forgive her. She'd be on the shit list for a while though. Like years. No christmas, easter, or halloween. No new toys, no TV/games, no music, no books that weren't educational or required for school. No hanging out with friends. She goes to school and then comes straight home to her room. I'd make sure people knew what a nasty liar she was too so no one would listen to her. She needs to learn that her actions have consequences.

It's clearly the wife's fault here. Maybe you should do your due diligence and actually properly look into such things yourself before blindly agreeing with your 7 year old kid who's clearly acting out over being disciplined. It's unclear from the scenario presented on just how far she took this belief and therefore it would be unclear to me whether or not I would "forgive" it, but if it's leading to divorce anyway I'm guessing it was far enough.

The kid's just being a brat and probably isn't even able to consider the long-term consequences of saying such a thing. I wouldn't even refer to this incident as the kid "causing" the divorce. There were clearly underlying trust issues going on already if this was all it took to topple the relationship.

if your kid said they saw the other parent do something with another person, how would you be able to verify whether it was true or not?

like, maybe it was a one-time thing, or it had come to an end, so it would basically be the other parent's word against the kid's, and if the kid recanted, it could also be seen as them recognizing something was wrong, and they didn't want to get either of their parents in trouble.

Shes just a dumb kid that didnt understand the consequences of her actions. Youd have to forgive her once she grew up and learned what she had done.

It's very possible that the dude realised life was a lot better without those pair of dickheads all up in his shit... so he might have forgiven them but decided pragmatically that this was a great out.

It's really hard to blame either the wife or the kid. The kid didn't know any better because children are just completely incapable of parsing the consequences to their actions. I certainly wouldn't expect the kid to think further than "I'm gonna get daddy in trouble" and not think further past what that actually means in practice. It's really shitty she'd do that, and she needs to be made duly aware that their divorce absolutely is her fault and that actions have consequences.

As for the mother? It's really hard to place her at fault too. You don't just assume your kid is lying to you when they come to you with information that severe. It could really be anything of serious consequence, such as a partner cheating, inappropriate touching, or anything dangerous; but when a child comes to you with that sort of information you should act on it. It's a shame that the child was a liar, but when it's a matter of grave consequence, sometimes you're just not going to have the information available other than the child's testimony. If the daughter went to the mother and said she was being molested, I don't think anyone would fault the mother because she didn't wait for evidence first. That just seems like an extremely shitty situation to find yourself in as a parent and a partner.

Smells of someone who is getting destroyed in divorce proceedings because they believed rumors and thought up sympathy bait to try to combat it.
