Some have that gradual slide into illness and death that doesn't end until they stop breathing, but it's common enough that in the last day or two of a pet's life, they perk up a little and you have a couple of good days with them until you wake up and they've died during the night. Other people have said that 17 is a long life for a dog, and I feel like if this dog has cancer and hasn't been eating and all that, this sudden energy burst is probably the final stretch.
