What makes Shuckle count?

I remember reading long ago that a Shuckle was the first pokemon put into a pokeball, which makes it the first official pocket monster, but I may just be misremembering, so I didn't count it.

Id argue Pikachu makes a decent fit as Ashs first

It's the first one the developers created and has index number #1 in the game as a consequence.

I went with Mew since it's the first Pokemon to normally exist on Earth.

I view Arceus and the Creation Trio more as deities than actual Pokemon. I know they're catchable and everything, but they literally created the entire universe. I think they sort of deserve to be in a league of their own.

Bulbasaur, Rhydon, and Mew all work depending on the context of the question.

Bulbasaur's first in the Pokedex. Mew's the first in lore. Rhydon's the first created.

mew and arceus were before time was created so asking which is first isn't a question that makes sense

Technically so are Ultra Beasts despite originating from universes where the word Pokemon doesn't even exist.

'Pokemon' are just what the in universe scientists decide they are. There's no actual criteria for what a Pokemon is, except like maybe that you can catch them in a poke ball?

I legit just wanted to try an interperate the lore in a unique way.

afaik ultra beats are usually or always called "ultra beasts", not "Pokemon". It's ambiguous. I don't think a semantic cop-out is interesting, though it may be unique, particularly as most who thought of it would notice the entry for Arceus has the phrase "this Pokemon" and stop with it then

Are the paradox pokemon 'officially' pokemon in the latest game? I don't even remember, I just remember characters arguing about it. Obviously, there can be at least some ambiguity. And I remember that Yamask is actually a human soul, so there's even more vagueness than you might think.

I was thinking more along the lines of should a God that literally created the entire universe be considered a Pokemon in the first place?

UBs are still in the Pokedex and have classifications like Parasite Pokemon, Swollen Pokemon, etc.

why not? if there's some mystical innate quality that makes something a Pokemon rather than Pokemon like I don't know why God couldn't have it. Made Mew and the rest in his image or whatever

I mean sure that's entirely possible. But it's equally possible that humans simply misinterpret what they are. I personally find the latter more interesting.

As far as I know they are not (and IMO shouldn't be) officially recognized as part of Pokemon's lore.

Theres a line in Japanese about how humans and Pokmon used to intermarry, but in English it was changed to just live together or something.

This a really fun theory. I mean there's a Human-Like Egg Group for crying out loud.
