AV Club had an article some years ago saying Avatar had no cultural impact because there was no continued merchandise or fandom akin to things like Star Wars or comic book movies. People have ran with that when arguing that the movie was a creative failure.

Making a lot of money isn't the same thing as having cultural impact.

Speaking only for the first one, a lot of people watched it, but it was like a fireworks show: pretty, flashy, loud, fun to watch, devoid of substance, and over almost immediately. It was a tech demo wearing a pocahontas skin, and just like a fireworks show, people remembered they liked it, but forgot the rest.

And just like a fireworks show, people went and saw another one. There's nothing wrong with being a big, spectacle, tech demo movie.

That said, the new one is remarkably better than the first. Still not up there with Cameron's greats, but still holding to the tradition that his "2" numbered sequels are always way better than the first.

I mean, Avatar was really weird where it made all the money but nobody really seemed that interested beyond like, the spectacle of it all.

There wasn't a whole lot of real comments about the movie, except like "lol Pocahontas with blue people" a billion times, and a couple "not my Avatar #ATLA". There still aren't, even with a new movie being the new blockbuster making a ****ton of money when theaters have a lot more competition.

There isn't a lot of real impact the movie had besides making a lot of money. It kind of made 3D movies a thing again, but that never took off, and a decade later the only real impact the Avatar movie had was blue pocohontas jokes.

It had very high expectations.

It did double what the first one opened to. The movie is more than 3 hours long limiting showings and movies havent been the same since covid with spidey nwh being the only exception, but it took all spiderman actors together to make it happen.

Also there was no hype for this movie? Everybody knows avatar as that good popcorn flick with generic story and amazing visuals, not necessarily cause it was an amazing movie.

And it it wasnt bc of China lockdowns it wouldve been already over 1B. If making close to 900 millions in 10 days is underperforming then Disney financial analysts suck at their job

Movie performance generally falls off hard after the first couple weeks. The studio is trying to bank on the idea that Cameron movies intrinsically have more "staying power" and will keep bigger crowds for longer. But they were hoping for more of a head start than they got, either way.

And this movie cost over 2 billion dollars to make. It straight up has to be the top grossing movie of all time just to break even. And they don't want to break even, they want a profit.

So, ridiculous as it sounds, yes, its underperformed because it cost so damn much. Its the exact same aituation that killed Waterworld some years ago, and the irony is actually hilarious.

It did not cost 2 billion. People are just going by with Cameron comments that it needed 2-3 billion to break even. 1 billion in variance is a fucking lot so its most likely a joke comment at how expensive it was. The most realistic budget I can find online seems to be 350-400 million with or without marketing which could be 200+mill. Still expensive and still needing close to 2 billion for profit. Also returns from the international market tends to be around 35% opposed to the 50-60% from domestic.

ALSO the filming of avatar 3 was done simultaneously with 2.

Spending 1 or 2 bill on a movie is just outrageously insane.

I only see Avatar movies in theaters for the 3D.

I think they said the 3D and Imax prices account for like 70% of the sales, so it's basically a "theme park ride" IMO. Great experience. Not sure it would translate well to home theater unless you have a very nice set up.

I like how people are now pretending that the 'no cultural impact' wasn't constantly used as an argument that Avatar 2 would flop for years.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

2's budget being used for 3 means that they're probably more looking at the series as a whole instead of 2 specifically. They make less money now to make more later.

That's not what cultural impact means.

In the decade since that movie came out, people didn't mention it except when it came to comparing box office returns. People didn't buy Avatar t-shirts or toys. They didn't play Avatar video games. They didn't ask, "When does the next Avatar come out?" Nobody was parodying the movie. If you look at Star Wars, Jurassic Park, or Harry Potter, those things all get talked about when there isn't a new movie. Movies and TV shows quote them, reference them, parody them. That's cultural impact.

Now, with this being Disney, they're probably going to merchandise the hell out of it going forward and make sure that nobody forgets Avatar again. But, for the past twelve years or so, that film has been dormant and not many have thought twice about it in that time.

Because it's doing pretty fucking bad over here. It did $55 million this entire weekend and did $130 million the first.

No Way Home did more in 3 days than Avatar has done in 10 days here.

I don't think those are relevant. They both opened in 4k screens and assuming everybody has to see it in 3D is silly. The international response also goes against that very notion.

No Way Home also came out during the height of Omicron.

Titanic and Avatar consistently made a lot of money over a long term to reach the records they had. Marvel movies are a lot more front loaded in comparison.

Way too early to call it.
