My mortgage is with them because they bought it from some other bank which bought it from the bank I originally took it out with, so I don't have much of a choice.

I really need to move accounts, but which banks aren't horrible? Chase is offering me like 600 bucks to open checking and savings with them, but I hear bad things about Chase too

It depends on your banking needs. A smaller, local bank with only a few branches is going to give you much better deals, both in terms of basic accounts but also things like interest rates on CDs. If you need to access the ATM a lot then picking a bank that puts machines in local convenience stores might be a better idea for you, and if you do a lot of traveling a larger or international bank will make sure you always have access to your money.

tl;dr: it depends.

My first bank account was with them because my dad loves them and suggested I bank with them. I hated it lol.

Chase is pretty much the gold standard in reliability

I do travel a lot but use cash very sparingly. I considered a local credit union at one point, perhaps I should check them out again. My credit card has cash withdrawal functionality if I somehow desperately need cash

Charles Schwab Bank is ironically one of the best banks.

Zero foreign transaction fees.

All out of network ATM transactions get reimburses.

No fees for stop payments. Or really fees anywhere.

If you dont actually need a physical bank, use online banks instead. Im unsure if Schwab Brokerage locations let you use banking features, tbh.

In the ~16 years since I graduated high school and took full control of my account (parents created it when I was a little kid), I haven't had a single problem with them. I have credit cards with other banks now and have looked around a bit at offers for checking/savings accounts, but haven't been tempted to make a big switch. I'll at least be keeping my credit cards with them anyways - that original one is my only card more than ~a year old (thus propping up my average account age) and the active cash card is great.

Now that my grandma has passed away and I have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of her WF accounts linked to my name, I'm going to be dealing with them for a while either way.

Similarly, my mom signed me up with them so I could get the college card for credit building. I'm actually still with them, as I like the online/app banking features as well as the active cash card (2% everywhere + cash back offers from random stores/companies). I haven't been screwed over yet. *knocks on wood*
